He was Regency Professor Emeritus of Economic History at University of Illinois, Springfield. He was Regency Professor Emeritus of Economic History at University of Illinois, Springfield. Born November 12, 1930 to Melvin Durward Long and Ramona Bernice Robinson and raised in Florida, he graduated from Ashford High School at the age of 15, received a B.A. from Troy State University, a B.S. from the Free Will Baptist Bible College in Nashville and a Masters Degree in History from Auburn University. His Ph.D. in U.S. and Latin American History was accomplished at the University of Florida in 1959. Dr. Longs career was long and varied. Over fifty years he had many professional accomplishments and accolades including Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Florida. He served as a friend and advocate of Public Higher Education across the US and in international spheres as well. Among these are Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin Center System (67-71), and an appointment by the Governor Ronald Regan to oversee the revision of the Master Plan for Higher Education for the State of California (71-73). His return to Wisconsin was brief recalled to service in California as the Vice President for Academic Affairs & Public Service Programs for the University of California System (73-76). In 1976, Long went to Hawaii and over 5 years held positions as Vice-President of the University of Hawaii Higher Education System and Chancellor of the Manoa campus. He was appointed Vice-President and Treasurer for the University of Wyoming, Laramie in 1981. He served 1 year as Scholar in Residence at the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges in 1983. He became President of SSU in 1984. After retiring as President, Long continued his career as Vice-President & Board Treasurer of Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Even in retirement he continued to teach as Professor Emeritus of History. Over the many years he co-authored a landmark study of student actism, Protest! and published many articles and monographs. He is preceded in death by his parents. Survived by his loving wife of 55 years Estrella Nina Long, sons, Melvin Durward, III (Paul Krunich) and Carl Patrick and grandson Samuel Patrick, daughter Elena Colleen (Steve and sons Garrett and Hunter) Martin; siblings Huey (Marie) and Joyce (Gerald) Dukes. He has a large number of living aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. He was much beloved by many across the United States, but particularly in the south and Florida from where he hailed. His life experience was as varied as his education and career. He played semi-pro baseball, enjoyed skiing and was an accomplished amateur tennis player. In later life he enjoyed spectator sports, fishing and boating. His sense of humor and gregarious nature will be missed. Funeral services will be held at Harmony Free Will Baptist Church in Lake Butler Florida, 500 SW 9th St, 32054 on Saturday, June 7th at 10:00 am. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 6th at Archer Funeral Home, 55 N. Lake Ave, Lake Butler, FL 32054 between 6:00 and 8:00 pm. He is to be interred at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Malone, Florida with his parents and other ancestors. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest a memorial to Harmony Free Will Baptist Church or the University of Florida Alumni Association in Dr. Longs name. A Memorial Service for Dr. Long will be arranged in Springfield at a later time to be announced by the family. Local arrangements are under the direction of Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel.
