Description	:	Moses Bartlett was a son of Rev. Moses Bartlett (1709-1766, a graduate of Yale College 1730) and Lydia (Fiske) Bartlett (1711-1776). Dr. Moses Bartlett was a physician and a graduate of Yale College, class of 1763. He had also studied with Dr. Benjamin Gale, practicing physician of Killingworth, who himself had been a Yale graduate, class of 1733. Dr. Moses Bartlett was a physician and a graduate of Yale College, class of 1763. He had also studied with Dr. Benjamin Gale, practicing physician of Killingworth, who himself had been a Yale graduate, class of 1733. Moses was born in what was then Middletown, in what was then Hartford Co., Connecticut Colonies, likely on 3 Sep 1737 (see more regarding questions about his date of birth in the following paragraph). Dr. Moses passed away 3 Mar 1810 in Middlesex Co., Connecticut. Note: While Middletown was part of Hartford Co at the time of his birth, in 1785 Middletown had become a part of the newly-formed Middlesex Co. Middletown itself had name changes, including Chatham, and became what is now Portland, Connecticut. Sources vary somewhat as to Moses' date of birth. In Genealogies of Connecticut Families (1983), v.1, p.108, his birth date was indicated as 3 Sep 1740, while Families of Early Guilford, Connecticut indicated his birth date as 3 Sep 1737 (this source and date would appear likely to be the most reliable). The Barbour Collection, v. 33, p. 46 gave yet another date of birth as 3 Feb 1739/40, which date however was elsewhere shown as the date of birth of his next-younger sibling, Jemima Bartlett. On 18 Feb 1767 in Middletown, Moses married Mary COOPER (d 23 Oct 1826), according to a Yale College biographical sketch on Moses and the Barbour Collection (see corrections section, in the back of vol., where her name was corrected to Mary from Anna). However, Barbour appears to indicate Mary as the daughter of Lamberton COOPER. That cannot be, as the Mary who was Lamberton's daughter married a Higby/Higbee and had children, including a Lamberton Higby. The Mary who married Moses could, however, have been the Mary who was the daughter of Lamberton's brother, Capt. John COOPER. Indeed, the Yale sketch indicated John Cooper and spouse as Mary's likely parents. Moses and Mary settled in Chatham, which was incorporated in 1767 but earlier had been a part of Middletown (in the area that, for some time period, had been known as East Middletown, and which later became part of Portland). In the Yale College sketch, Moses and Mary were said to have had at least 5 children. Various sources have been consulted but thus far all of the names of the children have not been found. Three identified children include: Mary Almira "Molly" (BARTLETT) PHELPS (1767-25 Jan 1852) married 8 Mar 1787 (div Jul 1798) Dr. Edward Elisha (known by the name Elisha) Phelps, had one child Charles Bartlett PHELPS (31 May 1787-21 Dec 1858); Julia BARTLETT unmarried, no children; and Joel BARTLETT (1783-3 Apr 1822) married Betsey WILCOX and had at least 5 children.
