GOERTZ Prominent Educator at Bethel College Died At His Home Dr. Peter S. Goertz, dean of Bethel College and professor of philosophy and religion since 1930, died suddenly last night at his home in North Newton. death came from a cerebral hemorrage. On a years leave of absence from the college to do relief and rehabilitation work in Europe under the auspices of the Mennonite Central Committee, Dr. and Mrs. Goertz had just returned from Europe to North Newton. Born in Auiliatta, Asiatic Russia in 1886, Dean Goertz attended McPherson college and the University of Chicago, receiving his Ph. D. degree from Yale University in 1933. He spent all his life, with the exception of four years when he was in ministry in New England, in Christian educational work. Serving under the American Mission Board in China from 1918 to 1926, Dr. Goertz was principal of a Chinese academy, executive secretary of Chinese churches in Foochow, and professor in the Union Theological seminary, Foochow China. After teaching four years at Tabor college, Hillsboro, Kans., he joined the Bethel college staff. article furnished by Julian Wall A member of many church and educational organizations. Dr. Goertz was a member of the American Philosphical Association, the American Oriental Society, and the Kiwanis International. He is survived by his wife and three children, Paul, of Wichita,and two daughters, Mrs. Edith Brown and Mrs. Ruth Rahn, both of Houston, Texas. Also two sisters and brother, Mrs. Helena Adrian and Mrs. Martha Heidebrecht, Buhler and Henry S. Goertz, Drake, Colo. Dean Goertz was well known and highly esteemed throughout the home community where his contacts have been closest and his influence most directly felt. He was always generous with his time and talents wit local church and civic organizations and his genial personality will be sorely missed. Funeral services will be held at the Bethel college Memorial Hall, Saturday morning at 10:00, Aug. 7, with the Rev. Lester Hostettler and President E. G. Kaufman officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in Greenwood cemetery.
