Read More	HISTORIC CAREER ENDED Dr. Lansdale is Called Home From an Eventful Life Richard Hyatt Lansdale, M.D., of this city, who was entitled to rank among the earliest, as he was among the most respected Pacific coast pioneers, departed this life at 12:15 yesterday morning. He had rounded out more than the four score of years alloted to man, his birth dating from December 23, 1811. Dr. Lansdale was a native of Maryland. Orphaned at the early age of ten years, he found a home with a benevolent physician at Troy, Ohio, who conferred upon the young man a liberal education in the sciences, languages and medicine. He entered the practice with Dr. Sabin, the guardian of his boyhood, continuing with him until 1834. Then he went to Indiana and helped found the town of Warsaw, where he located in the practice of medicine. Dr. Lansdale was united in marriage in 1838 to Miss Mary Culberton of Troy, Ohio, and with her returned to Ohio in 1841 because of her failing health, but she died in 1841. In 1846 he decided to come west, Oregon, then covering the whole northwest, being his objective point. But he stopped enroute at Mt. Carmel Illinois, where he practiced medicine a year, then pushed on to St. Joseph, Missouri, where he joined the Missouri battalion of mountain volunteers, which was sent on the frontier to relieve the Mounted Rifles, during the latters' absence while participating in the Mexican war. The doctor was mustered out at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, in the fall of 1848, and in the spring of 1849 he joined an immigrant party destined for California and crossed the plains with ox teams. Reaching Sacramento the doctor took the first ship for Oregon and crossed the Columbia bar October 24, 1849. In January, 1850, he purchased 160 acres of land and platted the town of Vancouver, where he opened an office for the practice of medicine. He became postmaster there, being the first north of Columbia river. He helped organize Clarke county and was its first county auditor. In January 1851, he came to Olympia, but proceeded down the sound to Whidby island, where he took a donation claim and founded the Covedale, which became Coupeville later. He subsequently helped organize Island county, following his practice meanwhile till 1854, when he was appointed Indian agent by President Pierce, which office he held six years. In 1862 he located at the Dalles, Oregon, where he served two years as clerk of the circuit court. Returning in 1867 from a trip east, he practiced medicine for a time at Dayton, and later moved to Tacoma and engaged in the practice. In 1873 he was appointed physician to the Skohomish Indians, remaining such until 1876, when he returned to Olympia and built the residence that was his home in his declining years. In 1879 he was physician in charge of the Quinault Indian agency, serving one year. Retiring from active practice in 1880, he devoted the remainder of his life to the care of his accumulated property interest. Dr. Lansdale celebrated his second marriage in Oregon City, where was married September 12, 1860, to Miss Mary Pope, who became the mother of his children and who died at the family home in this city about two years ago. Of this union four children were born of whom three survive, viz: Mary P., wife of Clayton Aldrich, Tacoma; Charles T., of this city and Anna E., wife of M. A. Root of Seattle. Dr. Lansdale has been a member of the Methodist church since childhood and the funeral service will be conducted from that church by Rev. Mintzer, pastor, assisted by Dr. Sulliger, president elder, at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. A short service will be held at the house at 2 o'clock of that day.
