Description	:	Richard was born July 16, 1843 in Leicester, England. He came with his parents and siblings to New Orleans on April 21, 1846, aboard the ship Windsor Castle. He married his first wife Laura/Louisa Downing on Oct. 29, 1873, at Marquette County, WI. She was was born on May 30, 1854, at Springfield, Dane county, WI, the daughter of Arnold Downing and Amorious Moore Downing. Read More	Richard was born July 16, 1843 in Leicester, England. He came with his parents and siblings to New Orleans on April 21, 1846, aboard the ship Windsor Castle. He married his first wife Laura/Louisa Downing on Oct. 29, 1873, at Marquette County, WI. She was was born on May 30, 1854, at Springfield, Dane county, WI, the daughter of Arnold Downing and Amorious Moore Downing. Her parents both passed away in 1879 and rest at the Middleton Junction cemetery, at Middleton, Dane County, WI. Richard and his first wife had a daughter Ella Almira Plackett (George Sumner) Hopkins, who was born on Feb. 2, 1876. They had an infant daughter Lillie Amarilous, who was born on June 19, 1879, in Crawford county, WI, and passed away on August 11, 1879 at Windsor, Dane County, WI. Richard read medicine in the office of Dr. N. P. Bunnell at Lodi, WI. Richard graduated from the Rush Medical College of Chicago in the class of 1871-1872. He started his practice at Windsor, Dane County, WI, in April of 1872. He is listed at that location in the 1880 census. Richard and his brothers purchased farm land in Spink county, SD. The 1893 school register for that area lists Richard as the parent of Ella. In 1895 Richard is residing at Superior City, Douglas County, WI. Two males and 1 female are listed as being at that address. By 1900 Richard's first wife has passed away and he has remarried. His second wife is Alice Jeanette Johnson who has divorced her first husband Ruben Frances Sherman. Her children by her previous marriage are Viola Hortense Sherman (Frank James) Struck, Hortense Sherman (Edmund) Pike & James Sherman. In the 1900 census for Superior City, Douglas county, WI, Alice's son Gean (is probably son James), age 25, is residing at the Plackett house. Richard has apparently given up his medical practice, as he's listed as a salesman. In the 1905 & 1910 censuses for that same location he is listed as a laborer. The 1910 census shows that Richard is once again widowed, and his nephew Burton Greenman is residing with him. Richard is still in Douglas county in the 1920 census. Richard's daughter remained in Spink couty, SD. He died there on Nov. 2, 1924, and his body was sent back to Iowa where he rests beside his second wife. They are both on the Stackpool plot, and Richard's name is engraved on the side of the large Stackpool stone. Mrs. Stackpool and Mrs. Plackett were both born in NY and their maiden name was Johnson. They are probably sisters.
