HUNTINGTON Greenwood County has lost one of her best and most highly respected citizens. Dr. S. P. Huntington died at the home of his son in Chicago, Illinois last Tuesday morning, October 25, 1892, after a long and painful illness. The doctor first suffered a severe attack of the grip (1) some time ago from which he had not fully recovered when last spring, he accidentally received a blow on the right elbow, from which he sustained a severe injury. Tuberculosis of the bone was developed and after months of suffering, Dr. Huntington was taken to the home of his son, Frederick R. Huntington, in Chicago, where on October 19th, 1892 Dr. Morgan, of the Chicago Medical College, attempted the difficult surgical operation of removing the elbow joint together with about four inches of bone. After the operation, the good doctor rallied, surprisingly well considering his weakness, but soon fell back into an unconscious condition in which he remained until his death came. The body was brought to this city (Eureka) for burial and the funeral services were held yesterday under the direction of the Masonic Fraternity of which the deceased had been an honored member for a great many years. The Reverend Sparr conducted the services at the Congregational Church assisted by the Reverend Hemmenway and Dr. Wright. Samuel Parkman Huntington was born September 4th, 1824, in Painesville, Ohio. He first married Mary Ann Cole, of the same place, September 4th, 1849. She died May 4th 1859, after having borne two children, Julian Claude Huntington and Charles Edwin Huntington, both of whom are dead. At Painesville, on February 28th, 1861, Dr. Huntington married Lucy Anne Morgan, the daughter of William Morgan and Lucy Avery Morgan of Groton, New York. In 1869, Dr. Huntington came to Greenwood County and had since made his home here. Mrs. Lucy Huntington died at Eureka on November 28th, 1887. He was a chosen as a member of the State Legislature in 1873, and served the county with ability and fidelity. He had always been regarded as one of our most progressive, liberal and substantial citizens and his memory will long be cherished by admiring friends. Dr. Huntington left four sons by his second marriage, Frederick R. Huntington and Colbert C. Huntington, who reside in Chicago, Illinois; Harry P. Huntington and Alfred P. Huntington, who live here in Eureka. They were all present for the funeral. (1) French spelling "Grippe"! It is influenza or the flu.
