Dr. Mumaugh had been in the medical profession about 50 years, and had practiced in Lima for 40 years. His widow, Catherine, is the only immediate survivor. The last member of a pioneer Allen-co family, Dr. Mumaugh had been ill since a year ago last January when he was stricken with a heart attack while visiting in California. Until recently, he had been a patient at St. Rita's hospital for about six months. Dr. Mumaugh served as an alienist in the famous Remus case here several years ago when the bootleg king won his freedom from the Lima State Hospital for the Criminal Insane. A graduate of Cincinnati Medical college, the veteran physician began practice in Beaverdam back in 1888. After a few years in that village, Dr. Mumaugh returned to Cincinnati where he served five years on the medical staff at the Longview Asylum. It was during the performance of his duties at the Cincinnati institution that the Lima doctor gained his reputation as an alienist. Besides having served as an alienist in the Remus case, Dr. Mumaugh had been called on scores of times to assist in determining mental cases in Allen-co probate court. Dr. Mumaugh had a wide following among the poor, to whom he was known as a benefactor. A native of Allen-co, Dr. Mumaugh was born east of Lima July 27, 1866. His father and grandfather, Isaac and Louis Mumaugh, respectively, were among the community's early settlers. Dr. Mumaugh was a member of the First Baptist church, Lima Chapter of Torch clubs and the Lima Medical society. He formerly was a member of Lima Memorial and St. Rita's hospital staffs. Several nephews and nieces survive. Among them are Clarence Mumaugh, member of the Allen-co board of elections; Wilbur Mumaugh, Lima realtor; Mrs. Alice Lepley, Mrs. Fred Loescher, Hobart Mumaugh and Donald Mumaugh, all of Lima; John Mumaugh, Cleveland; Frank Mumaugh, Hollywood, Calif., and others. The body is at the Davis-Miller and Son funeral home pending funeral arrangements. Dr. Mumaugh will be buried in Woodlawn cemetery. (published in The Lima News, Thursday, June 3, 1937, page 2)
