Description	:	Dr. Storer Woodford Boone was the fourth of five children--and youngest son-- born to Dr. Sherman Willard Boone and Elizabeth Day (Bird) Boone in Presque Isle, Maine. His parents were raised in Blissville and Keswick, New Brunswick, respectively, and had moved across the line to establish a medical practice in this rural town. His parents were raised in Blissville and Keswick, New Brunswick, respectively, and had moved across the line to establish a medical practice in this rural town. Young Storer enjoyed tending to his father's horses, ice-skating in winter, and playing cornet in the school band. Boyhood was nearly idyllic, except when he was 6 years old, he fell through the ice on the Presque Isle Stream and nearly drowned, but was dragged ashore by his faithful dog. Or when he contracted scarlet fever that left his hearing impaired. Storer graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1913 and entered McGill University, his father's alma mater, to pursue a medical degree. In 1919 as he was beginning his medical internship he developed tuberculosis and was sent to recover at the Trudeau Sanatorium at Saranac Lake, New York. By 1920 Storer Boone returned to Presque Isle to begin a general practice. He joined the medical staff at the new General Hospital. His specialty was surgery and obstetrics, and he soon was making house calls throughout the region. He married Phebe Lewis McGregor from Vancouver BC, who had been a student at McGill University. Two sons were born to them: Gary and Alan. Dr. Boone's practice included travel to rural farms and the occasional lumber camp. To make winter house-calls, at first by horse and sleigh over roller-packed roads, and then, in the 1920s and early 1930s, he first had a Ford Model T pick-up truck equipped with cletracs behind, and ski-like runners, replacing the front wheels, functioning as a primitive snowmobile. This was later replaced by a Ford Model B, modified as before, by the noted mechanic Ansel Adams. About this same period, he was appointed as Doctor on Call for the central Aroostook sections of the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad. Toward the end of the era of steam, he was presented with an enormous, 3-foot long oil-can used for lubricating the huge drivers of the steam locomotives. During World War II the Presque Isle Army Air Field greatly expanded his patient load. Dr. Boone, often hailed as "Dr. Storah" by many around town, maintained a heavy schedule, regularly working seven days a week, and often remaining in his office until 7 PM. He still made house calls, often in the dead of night, and held office hours one evening a week. He did enjoy his rare days off, spending time at the family's camp at Shin Pond. Even though he could not keep horses at his new home in town, he loved horses, but never rode them. He also loved baseball, and threw an unerring fast ball. And no one was known to beat him at horseshoes. He was also tough to beat at cribbage, and in his retirement always tuned in to a Red Sox game. By 1959 the city had outgrown its hospital facilities and a new one was being planned. Dr. Storer was one of the key people who helped obtain funding for the hospital. He and three residents traveled to Dallas to visit Marie Gould Wildes, whose father had been a Presque Isle resident and a U. S. Senator. She granted the necessary funds and the Arthur R. Gould Hospital was completed. In addition the Wildes family established the Wildes Foundation at the hospital to honor Dr. Storer Boone. Dr. Boone retired in 1967 at the age of 73. For many years his portrait hung in the vestibule of the hospital, bearing the title "Our Guiding Influence." Professional honors included election as Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (1929) and to the New England Surgical Society (1950). He was an active member of the Maine Medical Association. Dr. Storer Boone was a very popular and much loved figure in the region around Presque Isle. He kept his long-held post-office box, no. 549, more for the excuse of greeting friends in brief morning stops at the Post Office, since mail was also delivered to his office on Main Street, and at home. Over four decades after his retirement, the A. R. Gould Hospital still sponsored annual medical lectures in a series named in his memory.
