Dr. Thomas Bruce Freas, professor of chemistry at Columbia University, died Thursday night at the Lenox Hill Hospital after a short illness. Dr. Freas was an internationally known inventor and manufacturer of precision apparatus for chemical and industrial research. He was fiftynine years old. Professor Freas designed the chemistry laboratory features of the recently erected $1,000,000 Chandler Building at Columbia. He had invented thermostats, ovens, incubators, ventilating apparatus and other laboratory necessities and was considered an authority on thermodynamics. Born in Newark, Ohio, November 2, 1868, the son of Andrew and Mary Bruce Freas, Professor Freas graduated from Leland Stanford University. He became principal of the Hiawatha (Kansas) High School and held that position for two years. He served the Western Electric Company in Chicago as a chemist until 1898. In the same year he became assistant professor and graduate student in the University of Chicago. He became manager of the Ernest Leitz apparatus house in 1903 but in the next year he returned to the University as an instructor. He received the degree of Ph.D. in 1911 and in the same year was made Assistant Professor of Chemistry, later becoming Associate Professor and finally Professor. Besides holding his professorship, Professor Freas was president of the T'hermo-Electric Instrument Company of Newark when he died. His contributions to Science were very notable. He was a member of the American Chemical- Society, the Society of Chemical Industry and the Chemists' Club iof New York and Sigma Xi and Phi Lambda Upsilon, an honorary chemical society. Professor Freas was also a member of the American Electro-Chem-ical Society and a fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Geographical Society and the New York Academy of Science. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock in St. Paul's Chapel on the Campus by the Rev. Dr. Raymond C. Knox, University Chaplain. Dr. Freas lived in Leonia, N. J., and is survived by his widow, the former Mary Kuhn of Leavenworth, Kansas, whom he married in 1898, and a son, Royal B. Freas. The honorary pall-bearers were Dr. William Snow, Director of the International Hygiene and Social Society, Walter Eimer and Professors H. T. Beans, Walter Rautenscrauch, Cassius J. Keyser, J. L. Morgan, C. W. Hixson, Marston T. Bogert, John M. Nelson and Samuel J. Kiehl of Columbia University.
