History of Mills County, 1985, page 318, Submitted by Elizabeth Beattie Gidley – THOMAS WILLIAM GIDLEY – Thomas William Gidley, son of Richard L. and Euphesena Gidley, was born n Malvern on October 17, 1881. He was educated in the Malvern Schools, Iowa State College, and received his Doctor of Veterinary degree from McKillips Veterinary College in Chicago in 1903. Dr. Gidley practiced in Sidney, Iowa from 1905 to 1908. In 1908 he purchased the practice and home of Dr. Humphrey, and on October 28, 1908 he married Ethel Rosalind Hill, daughter of Rev. Enoch and Eliza Hill in Villisca, Iowa and they started life together in Malvern. "Doc" as he was fondly called, was six foot eight, a well-known citizen of Mills County. He had a wide acquaintance among rural and town people alike. Before the automobile he made his calls by horse and buggy, never missing a call because of roads or weather. He practiced for 50 years. Dr. Gidley was active in local and state organizations, serving on the city council, school board, as president of the Iowa State Veterinary Medical Association and as a member of the executive board of the American Medical Association. He was a member of Rotary, AF&A. M. 234 for over 50 years, BPOE 531, Commercial Club and Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Gidley was also active in the community, serving on the school board, library board and in the Methodist Church. She was a member of OES and P.E.O. Mrs. Gidley died November 1956. Dr. Gidley died August 1957. They had three children, Thomas William, Jr.; Gretchen, who died October 1966 and an infant son who died at birth. They are buried in the Malvern Cemetery.
