Died 4 March 1887 in Malvern, Mills county, Iowa. Married Euphrosena (Sena) Mabee on 15 April 1878 in Iowa. 4 children: Richard Eugene Gidley, born August 1879; Thomas William Gidley, born 1881; Anna Gidley, born 1884; and babe born and died in 1887. History of Mills County, 1985, page 318, Submitted by Elizabeth Beattie Gidley – RICHARD GIDLEY – Richard Lewis Gidley was born in England June 4, 1839. He came to America as a young boy with his parents, settling in Wisconsin. During the Civil War he enlisted and served with the 12th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry. (His great-grandson, Thomas William Gidley III has the musket used by him.) Mr. Gidley came to Malvern establishing himself as a contractor in 1871. He was the contractor for the first Methodist Church in Strahan in 1884, and did a great deal of building in Malvern. In 1877 he was elected mayor of Malvern. On April 15, 1878, at Frederick, Iowa he married Euphesena Mabee, a teacher, bringing her to Malvern where he had a home waiting. In 1886 he was appointed Postmaster in Malvern and served until his death May 4, 1887 at the age of forty-six. He left three children: Richard, Thomas W., and Anna. Euphesena Mabee Gidley, his widow, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Mabee, the agent for the Burlington Railroad. She was born on September 26, 1855. Mrs. Gidley was appointed to succeed her husband as Postmaster by President Benjamin Harrison. (Her notice of appointment is the proud possession of her grandson, Thomas William Gidley, Jr., who himself was appointed Postmaster in Malvern by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on July 31, 1959) Mrs. Gidley held the office until her remarriage June 17, 1896 to Aaron Henry Dolph. Mr. and Mrs. Gidley are both buried in the Malvern Cemetery. HISTORY OF MILLS COUNTY, IOWA, Pages 634 & 635 – GIDLEY, RICHARD L., is a cousin from over the sea. He is a native of Cornwall, Wales, born June 4, 1841. At the age of five years he immigrated to America with his parents who located in Wisconsin. Here Mr. G. remained until 1865, when he went to school some, and commenced learning the carpenter's trade. That year he came to Iowa, stopping at Des Moines, where he remained until 1868. From thence he went to Council Bluffs, remaining until 1870, when he sought Malvern for his future home, of where he was among its first settlers. In it, has held various positions of trust – Mayor, town trustee, twice, ad is now serving his third term under the present organization. He has worked at the carpenter trade for twenty-five years, having commenced to learn its mysteries when but fifteen years old. He is now the proprietor of the Inter Ocean Hotel of Malvern. Sena Babee, of Monroe county, Iowa, joined Mr. Gidley, as a co-laborer in his pilgrimage through life's journey, April 15, 1878. One child, Richard E., born at Malvern, August 24, 1879 has been added to that home circle. Mr. D, did good service for his adopted country in the rebellion. He enlisted in company I, of the second Wisconsin infantry, in April, 1861, and served in the army until June 30, 1864, He as in the battles of Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Charlottsville, South Mountain, Antietam, and Gettysburg, at which battle he was wounded. He explains that he fired the first shot from the infantry, at the battle of Gettysburg. From the effects of his wound he as confined to the hospital some eleven months He was a prisoner for the three days to rebels occupied the town. He is a Mason and was master of the Silver Urn Lodge of Malvern for two terms.
