He was born in Fort Wayne on April 28, 1920 to the late Alfred and Gladys (Kinzie) Koontz. William married Ellen M. Hull on Oct. 24, 1943. She preceded him in death on Oct. 2, 2004. He was born in Fort Wayne on April 28, 1920 to the late Alfred and Gladys (Kinzie) Koontz. William married Ellen M. Hull on Oct. 24, 1943. She preceded him in death on Oct. 2, 2004. William was a veteran of the United States Army Air force. He and Ellen lived in Japan for a year where he was stationed with the army after WWII and returned in 1948 to make their home in Gas City. Doc Koontz graduated from IU Medical School and did his internship in Indianapolis. He worked as a general practitioner from 1948 until his retirement in 1989. He was the plant physician for Owens-Illinois Glass Company for 35 years. He had various offices on medical staff at Marion General Hospital and was on the board of directors for three years. He was on the advisory board for P.U.K. for eight years and served six years on the school board. William was a Ham Radio Operator for 52 years and his call letters were ‘W9POX'. He was a member of the Gas City First United Methodist Church since 1950, Gas City Kiwanis since March 1, 1948 and the Masonic Lodge F&AM since 1942. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and Shrine Lodges. Survivors include his son, Stephen B. (Karen) Koontz of Gas City; daughter, Carla Koontz (Dai Xiao) of Jackson, Mich.; step granddaughter, Jennifer; step grandson, Rob Osenbaugh; brother and sister-in-law, Ward and Zola Riffe of Florida; a cousin, Ross (Ellen) Vogelgesang, Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Gladys Koontz; wife, Ellen Koontz; and sisters, Suzan and JoAnn. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St. in Gas City, Indiana. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at First United Methodist Church, 213 E. South ‘A' Street in Gas City with the Rev. Doug Davies officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Tipton. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 213 E. South ‘A' St., Gas City, IN 46933 or to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 2211 N. Oak Park Avenue, Chicago, IL 60707. The family would like to extend special thanks to Doc's caregivers.
