The cause of death was congestive heart failure. Born in Anderson , Dr. Bolt was the son of the late Ollie Brown Bolt and Gladys Wells Bolt of Anderson. He graduated from Boy's High School in 1945 where he was an award winning football player under Coach William Dillard, Sr., who was an early role model. He graduated from Clemson University in 1949 with a degree in civil engineering and worked with the engineering firm of Lockwood Greene, the oldest industrial engineering and construction firm in the United States . Subsequently, he served in Korea as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon his discharge, he returned to South Carolina determined to dedicate his professional career to medicine. He attended the Medical University of South Carolina where he graduated with a medical doctorate. He specialized in psychiatry and trained at the Medical University of Georgia in Athens,Georgia under Dr. Corbett H. Thigpen, the author of "Three Faces of Eve". Dr. Bolt completed his residency at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Upon completing his residency in psychiatry at Emory University in Atlanta,Georgia, Dr. Bolt returned to Anderson in 1963 where he established his practice, becoming the first psychiatrist in the Greater Anderson area serving patients throughout Northwestern South Carolina and Northeastern Georgia. He established the psychiatric unit at the Anderson Memorial Hospital and served a term as the Chief of the Medical Staff of the hospital. He became the first Executive Director of the Anderson-Oconee-Pickens Mental Health Center and was widely known for his efforts to bring mental health services to the under-served communities in the area. Upon his retirement he founded Carolina Bariatric Associates with offices in Anderson and throughout South Carolina . He was a member of the Anderson County Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association. In addition to medicine, he owned several business concerns including Mark Homes, a manufactured housing business based in Denver, South Carolina; Haflinger Imports, an importer and sales agent for the Austrian all terrain vehicle manufactured by Steyr-Daimler-Puch; Wilmington Corporation a textile mill based in Wilmington, North Carolina; and Chanticleer, his home on Lake Hartwell, where he raised championship American Quarter Horses, Tennessee Walking Horses, Black Angus cattle, and St. Bernard dogs. Dr. Bolt was an avid golfer throughout his life and a member of the Anderson Country Club and Cobb's Glen Country Club. In later life, he particularly enjoyed spending time at the Cobb's Glen Clubhouse with his family and friends. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Anderson and the First Baptist Church of Anderson. He was previously married to Jane Gray Sullivan and Jacqueline Rogers. Dr. Bolt was predeceased by his sister, Jane Starr Bolt Smith. Surviving are his sons, Thomas Alvin Waldrep Bolt and his wife, Jenifer Smith of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; William Frank Bolt, Jr. and his wife, Donna of Wrightsville Beach, North Carol ina, and Bradley Sullivan Bolt of Anderson; daughter, Laura Bolt Roper of and her husband, David of Murrell's Inlet, South Carol ina; granddaughters, Jane Gray Roper of Murrell's Inlet, South Carolina and Royce Stevenson Tranum of Durango, Colorado; grandsons William Adams Bolt, Taylor Sullivan Bolt, Bradley Sullivan Bolt, Jr. and Michael Clarke Bolt of Anderson and Joshua David Roper of Murrell's Inlet, South Carolina; and nephews, Joel Stanley Smith of Anderson and Joseph Anderson Smith of Confluence, Pennsylvania.
