Hazen died at his home in Creighton, Nebraska, on Tuesday evening at 5:30. Death was due to diabetes and complications. Dr. Hazen was actively engaged in the practice of medicine for many years, but was forced to retire last July owing to ill helath. He was not taken critically ill until last Saturday when he suffered a stroke of partial paralysis, and was unconscious to the last. A deep sorrow and regret prevails over the entire community in the passing of this pioneer physician. The deceased was born at Dodge County, Wisconsin on April 13, 1848 and died on May 8, 1928 at the age of 80 years and 25 days. He moved from Dodge county to Dane county, Wisconsin in the spring of 1850. In the year of 1865, at the age of 17 years, he took up the study of medicine under Dr. Wm. Warren, and was later associated with this doctor in his chosen profession. Later he moved to Knox county and continued his practice. During his residence of 52 years in this county he passed through many trying ordeals and endured even more than the ordinary tribulations of the hardy pioneer. In 1878 he walked from Walnut Grove to Yankton, a distance of 65 miles, in one day, and often made professional call from Walnut Grove to Niobrara and back, a distance of 50 miles, in one day. Dr. Hazen often told of another experience he had back in those pioneer days, of which not very many men can boast. He and his brother walked from Yankton to Niobrara, and on the trip went 3 miles north and back to the main road, also 1 mile south and back to the main road; then on to Running Water, coming across to Niobrara by boat. Upon their arrival there they attended a dance, and did not miss a number up to 3 o'clock that morning When the dance was completed they walked to Walnut Grove and partook of a breakfast with Orland Newell. Dr. Hazen came to Creighton in the summer of 1885, and has practiced medicine in this city for the past 43 years. On March 30, 1887 he was united in marriage to Emma Ann Walsh at Niobrara, Nebr., by Judge James Cooley. To this union were born five children, who are Floyd Hazen, Opportunity, Nebr.; Mrs Jos. Heins, Wilmington, Calif.; Elmer Hazen, Sioux City; Waymond Hazen, Creighton and Mrs. Leonard Kocina, Verdigre. Other surviving relatives are his wife, two brothers, John Hazen, Stratton, Colo. and Benjamin Hazen, Early, Iowa, besides 11 grandchildren and also numerous friends. Dr. Hazen practically lived his life in Creighton and Knox county. His epitaph is written more elegantly in the hearts of men and neighbors than it can ever be written in marble. All who knew him as a friend or in business circles, respected him for his fine manly character and good business judgment. For the past 43 years Dr. Hazen was identified with the growth of the community. His endeavors were founded on the ideal of giving the best there was in him, where occasion arose, which he did unstintedly. His good deeds are indelibly impressed on many, who have had recouse to his intimate acquaintance and his virtues and examples for doing good may be emulated. A tribute to his man is justifable. Dr. Hazen was a member of the I.O.O.F. and Muscovite orders and at one time belonged to the A.O.U.W. lodge. Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) from the M.E. church at 2 o'clock in charge of the pastor, Rev. E.N. Littrell. Friends of the family extend condolences to those, who grieve the loss of a husband and father. The News unites with a great number of friends in expressions of sincere sympathy.
