He was vice president and medical director at Merrill Lynch from 1990 until his retirement in 1995. He worked previously in the same capacity at Monarch Capital Corp. from 1976 to 1990. He was a partner in Suburban Medical Associates of Lee and a staff member at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield and the Naval Station hospitals in Oakland, Calif., Kodiak, Alaska, and Great Lakes, Ill., where he practiced internal medicine. Born in Whitinsville, he graduated from Northbridge High School in Whitinsville, earned a bachelor of science degree in zoology from Wheaton (Ill.) College and received a medical degree from the Tufts University Medical School. He did his internship and residency at the Naval Hospital in Great Lakes. He was certified by the Board of Insurance Medicine in 1981. He was a longtime Lee resident before moving to this town 20 years ago. He was a Vietnam War Navy veteran and served in the Army Reserve. He was a member and adult education leader of Trinity United Methodist Church in Springfield and an elder of the Presbyterian Church. He was president of the Association of Life Insurance Medical Directors of America, a past chairman of the Insurance Medical Group of New England, a member of the Hampden District Medical Society and a director of the Pioneer Valley Red Cross. He was a nominating councilor of the Massachusetts Medical Society, belonged to the American Medical Association and served on the executive board of the Greater Springfield Visiting Nurse Association in 1976-86. He was its president in 1981-83. He was a past president of the Berkshire District Medical Society and the Health Care Foundation of Western Massachusetts and a past editor of The Hampden Hippocrat. He was a member of the Massachusetts State Health Coordinating Council in 1978-82, chairman of the professional division of the United Way of Pioneer Valley in 1983-86, a member of the steering committee of the Greater Springfield Health Care Coalition and chairman of the Ad-Hoc Committee on Workers Compensation. He leaves his wife, the former Ann E. Haagsma; two sons, Dr. Steven K. of Frankfurt, Ill., and Dr. W. Jeff of Farmington, Conn.; a daughter, Susan Baker Martin of Dartmouth; a brother, Allen of Whitinsville; and eight grandchildren. A son, Jonathan, died in 1987. The funeral will be Saturday afternoon at Trinity United Methodist Church in Springfield, with burial at the convenience of the family in Glendale Cemetery , Wilbraham.
