Pursel Davis Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements. Duane was born January 27, 1933, the son of John E. and Marrit "Tiny" (O'Bryon) Gifford, in Marshalltown. He was raised in the Liscomb area, graduating from the Liscomb High School in 1952. He continued his education, earning a degree at both Coe College in Cedar Rapids in 1956 and AIB in Des Moines in 1962. Duane was united in marriage to Phyllis Cortelli. They later divorced. In 1956, Duane began his career in music teaching accordion lessens at the American Academy of Music. In 1957 Duane played with the Eddie Allen Band in Norfolk, VA, traveling the east and south coast. From 1958 to 1962, he played with the Don Hoy Bands and Combos Dixieland Bands in Des Moines. He then played the piano for the Los Alamos Golf Club in Los Alamos, NM. In 1963, Duane was employed at the Atomic Research Laboratory, and played in big bands in Los Alamos, until retiring in 1993. He then played piano at the American Legion in Conrad. Duane had a passion for music and was honored to play at Eisenhower's Inauguration with the Coe College Band. He enjoyed history and geneology. Duane was a member of the Liscomb Church of Christ, Elks Club, National Rifle Association, and a volunteer for the Cliff Hayes Band in Marshalltown from 1995 to 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents.
