Description	:	Duane Toomsen passed away at the age of 83 on Monday, November 20, 2017, at Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines, Iowa. He is survived by his wife Erna, of the home, his daughter Amy, grandchildren Tyle, Vaughn, Elsa, Haldan and Aubrey, of Boonville Missouri, and his son Eric, and granddaughter Jessica of Atlanta, Georgia and many nieces and nephews. Duane served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Upon his return, he attended Wartburg College, Iowa State Teachers College, and ultimately received his Master's degree from the State College of Iowa, which is now University of Northern Iowa. Duane served as the Environmental Education Consultant for the Iowa Department of Education for 34 years, encouraging and equipping thousands of teachers and creating a lasting impact on conservation through workshops such as Project Wild and Nature Speaks. He was instrumental in the passage of REAP, Resource Protection and Enhancement legislation. In April of 1998, the Iowa Conservation Education Coalition (IAN-ICEC) named him as the first recipient of the Aldo Leopold Award to recognize hislifetime of achievement in environmental education and leadership. He was a longtime member of Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church in Des Moines, serving as both a deacon and as an elder Duane's passion for the outdoors and all that it contained carried over into a love of hunting and fishing with friends and family. He also loved to travel, and combined it with teaching, travelling to Australia nine times with groups of teachers who were able to make connections with teachers down under while earning continuing education credits. He and Erna also traveled extensively, visiting Africa, Costa Rica, the Galapagos Islands, Peru, Ecuador, Iceland, and Europe, among others. He did not neglect travel on the North American continent, traveling often to Canada for fishing trips, and to the National Parks all across the United States. Funeral services in Des Moines will be held at 10:00 AM on November 24, 2017 at Westover Funeral Home, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines Iowa, 50322. The family will be receiving friends at 9:00 AM prior to the service. A second service will be held in Holland, Iowa at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, 18935 K Avenue, Holland, Iowa, 50642 at 2:30 PM. Burial with military honors will follow the service, in the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
