He was born June 12, 1930, in Wichita to Rudolph and Charlotte (McKinley) Kelsch. They preceded him in death. He graduated from the Trego County school system. He was born June 12, 1930, in Wichita to Rudolph and Charlotte (McKinley) Kelsch. They preceded him in death. He graduated from the Trego County school system. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1947 and was a Korean War veteran. He began his career in Wakeeney. He moved to Newton in 1952 where he had a 33-year career in positions from patrol officer to chief of police of the Newton Police Department. He was named chief of police in 1979 and served in that position until his retirement in 1985. He was voted Kansas Outstanding Police Officer in 1967 by the Kansas Department of American Legion. He received a state award for Peace Officer of the Year in 1967. He was a juvenile officer for Harvey County from 1976 to 1978. After his retirement from the Newton Police Department, he worked as a vehicle identification number inspector for the Kansas Highway Patrol before retiring in 1995. Until August 2002, he worked as a car transport carrier for Conklin Cars. He was a sports fan and played baseball and coached basketball, bowling and softball teams. He was a pioneer in promoting Title IX sports for women and coached softball at Newton High School. He was coach for the Newton Starlets, a fast-pitch team that competed in state and regional tournaments. Survivors include: his wife, Beverly Kelsch of Newton; two daughters, Denize Anderson of Derby, and Desiree Kelsch of Newton; a son, Jeff Kelsch of Newton; a brother, Ernest Kelsch of Newton; a sister, Nathalee Roth of Salina; and two grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Myron Kelsch. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Petersen Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Keating officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials have been established with Newton Booster Club in care of the funeral home.
