A funeral service will be held October 6th, 2016 at Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff. Interment will follow at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Dwaine was born in Gering on February 20, 1927 to Harry and Edith (Bartow) Johns. He contracted polio at 18 months of age. Dwaine was born in Gering on February 20, 1927 to Harry and Edith (Bartow) Johns. He contracted polio at 18 months of age. As a small child he endured several surgeries, but never regained full use of his legs. This did not stop him nor did he complain. He mastered walking on his hands with his legs and feet dangling in the air. When his cousins and brothers went hill climbing in the Wildcats, Dwaine would go along. He crawled on his hands and knees, uphill and down, dragging his right leg along. He later wore braces to walk. Dwaine graduated from Melbeta High School. Because he could not participate in sports, he was the score keeper and mascot for the basketball team. Following his father’s heart attack, he took over many duties on the farm, tending the cattle and doing the tractor work. He was determined to live his life to the fullest. He married Loyce Arnold in 1965 and they lived in Gering. Loyce was later diagnosed with M.S. and Dwaine cared for her until she moved into Northfield Villa where he visited daily. Dwaine farmed until he could no longer get on the tractor. He continued raising cattle for many years. He loved taking his nieces and nephews along to feed the cows which were quite tame. Although he had no children of his own, he was a beloved uncle to all of them. Later, Dwaine moved into The Residency in Scottsbluff where he gave the nurses a bad time, which they seemed to enjoy. His sense of humor and easy smile will be remembered by many. Dwaine was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his brother, Bill Johns; sisters, Betty Lewis and Erma Johnston; brothers-in-law, Ed Hoff, Bob Johnston, Al Cook, Ross Lewis and George Schneider; nieces, Rhonda (Sowerwine) Stander, Cheryl (Johnston) Ford, Janet (Hoff) Abel and Robin Sowerwine; and nephew, Jerry Lewis.
