Susan was born November 17, 1947, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Clayton W. and Elizabeth “Betty” (Cameron) Conte’. She was raised and educated in Marshalltown, graduating from Marshalltown High School in 1966. Susan graduated from Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, in 1970 with B.A. Degree in Sociology. She married David Atherton on October 15, 1972, in Ames, Iowa. Susan worked for many years as a paralegal and client intake interviewer for the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office, Child Support Unit. She was valued as an exemplary and professional member of the staff. On June 15, 1983, Susan was certified by the Library of Congress as a Braille Transcriber. Until 1991 Susan volunteered her services to the American Red Cross in Longmont, Colorado. Due to her great skill, she was entrusted to translate complex technical and academic materials. She was particularly proud of creating a Monopoly board game that provided an even playing field for the sighted and non-sighted player. Susan was an intelligent, talented, and creative person. Her interest and skill in a wide range of artistic endeavors included cross-stitch, stenciling, and professional level cake baking. Her skills were legendary. She had a gifted eye for home decor and fashion. Susan was a voracious reader with a masterful command of the English language. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a contagious laugh. Susan was a thoughtful person, always looking to do a kind gesture for others. She loved all animals and could be counted on to protect and care for them with great affection. She is survived by her husband David, Sioux Falls, a sister Samantha (Mrs. Kenneth) Wagaman, father-in-law Verllyn “Mike” Atherton, brother-in- law Steven (Jodi) Atherton, sister-in-law Lisa (Mrs. Roy) Campbell, B.C., Canada , numerous nephews and niece and her good friend Elise Flesher, Lyons, Colorado. Susan will be laid to rest with her companions, Deacon, Cooper, Lexi, and Tucker.
