FUNERAL ON MONDAY Saw 18 Months Service in Europe, Leaves Widow and Two Young Sons. Earl Hines, former citizen of Manchester, and ex-service man, who spent eighteen months in the service with the A. E. F. in France, died in ah hospital in Savanna, Ill., Thursday night, Jan. 19, 1935, from injuries he received on a highway, when struck by a car between the Palisades CCC camp near the city of Savanna, Ill., on Saturday evening, Jan. 5th, 1935, when on his way home. It appears that Mr. Hines had been cook in a large saw mill camp at Savanna Ill., from Nov. 1933, and in March 1934, secured the position of mess sargeant in the CCC camp near that city. Previous in his work as cook in the camp at Savanna he was cook in a saw mill camp at Edgewood for some time. His family has lived in Savanna since November, 1933. The remains of the ex-service man were brought to the home of Mrs. Hines' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Wood, on North Franklin street, and funeral services were held at the Brown funeral home Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. E. D. Wells, pastor of the Methodist church, had charge of the services.. Members of the American Legion post of Manchester acted as pall bearers, and also formed color guard and firing squad to do military honors at the receiving vault in Oakland cemetery. Earl E. Hines, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Hines of Masonville, was born in Clayton county, Iowa, near Edgewood, on Feb. 17, 1896. He grew to young manhood there, and went to Pilliger, Minn., where he spent a years. On April 27, 1917, he enlisted in the 133rd infantry. Co. L. at Ft. Snelling, Minn., and spent eighteen months in the World war, seeing much active service during that time. He was honorably discharged Feb. 14, 1919, and remained in the government employ at Camp Dodge, near Des Moines, for one year thereafter. He returned to Manchester and was united in marriage with Miss Olive Wood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo Wood, on April 6, 1921. Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Hines made their home here, where the former engaged in the restaurant business for a short time, moving later to Dundee and engaged in the same business. The residence of the family since 1933 has been at Savanna, Ill. Mr. Hines is survived by the widow, two sons, Robert E. aged 11, and Rolland, age 8, of Savanna; by his parents of Masonville, and the following brothers and sisters--Lyman, Emmet and Harry Hines, of Manchester; Mrs. Clifford Wheeler, of Brainard, Minn.; Mrs. Roy Hines of Pilliger, Minn.; Mrs. Wm. Ritter; Mrs. Lyle Utley, and Mrs. Ernest Meister, all of Manchester, and Mrs. Walter Schady of Delaware. one brothers, Charles, died at the age of four years. Mr. Hines answered his country's call when men were mustered into service during the great World war, spent eighteen months on foreign soil with the American forces, and returned home without having suffered physical injury during numerous engagement only to be struck down on a highway by a young motorist, who is said to have been under the influence of liquor,, while on his way home after the day's work. The man responsible for the tragedy, it is said, did not even offer assistance to the man fatally injured, but left him in his helpless condition along the highway, to be picked up by men who happened along in a large freight truck, and taken to the hospital where he died without ever regaining consciousness. Arnold E. Roehl, superintendent of the camp, stated in a letter to the sorrowing widow and children, that Mr. Hines had been one of the most dependable men in camp, and that the manner in which he performed his work was a credit to the organization of which he was a part, and that his tragic death brought a great sorrow in his fellow workers in the camp. Mrs. Hines and the two young sons, and the brothers and sisters, have the sincere sympathy of many friends in the sorrow that has come to them because of the tragic death of a kind and devoted husband and father.
