Death was directly due to pneumonia which developed following an illness of nine weeks, due to a complication of ailments with infection. The past few days there had been an improvement in the condition of Mr. Hughes offering encouragement to the family and friends, but a change for the worse came at 5: 00 o'clock Tuesday morning and he grew rapidly worse until death an hour later. The body was removed from the home following the death of the Young Furniture company parlors (where it was prepared for burial and then taken back to the home where friends may call at any time. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9:00 at St. Johns. church and will be conducted by Rev. Father Joseph Bilstein. Burial will be in the Catholic cemetery. Mr. Hughes, I was a devoted member of St. Johns Catholic church (and faithful in attendance when his health would permit. Mr. Hughes who was fifty-five years of age was born in Tipton on Mill street, within two blocks of his late home, July 23rd, 1876, and was the eldest Of eight children born to Thomas and Laura (Quinn) Hughes. He spent part of his early boyhood in Tipton, the parents later moved to a farm north of Tipton, now owned by Henry Tebbe where the father who was a civil war veteran, died in 1900. He was married June 19th, 1907 to Miss Mary Neinabor of Tipton county and is survived by the wife and two children, a daughter Madonna, who is a graduate nurse at St. Vincent's hospital at Indianapolis who been at the home caring for father during his illness, and son, John Thomas, at home. He also survived by the mother, Laura Hughes, aged 77 of North Main street, and six brothers and a sister, N. E. Hughes of Pendleton, Ben Hughes of New Market, Mo., Prof. O. H. Hughes of Richmond, W. W. Hughes of Arcadia, C. C. Hughes of Tipton, Prof J. M. Hughes of Evanston, and Mrs. Ida Shaw of Tipton. The brother, Ben Hughes, of Missouri, has been at the brother's bedside for the past seven weeks and assisting in his care. Mr. Huges was elected treasurer of the county and served the county faithfully during 1922 and 1923, being elected on the Republican ticket and was succeeded in office by W. S. Walker. About twenty-three ago while employed with the Indiana Union Traction Company he met with a permanent injury while working on a line car, the accident happened near Peru. His back was broken. The injury came near proving fatal at the time and for months he lay perfectly helpless. Later there was an improvement but he was forced to wear a steel jacket during all the years. Earl Hughes was a man who had many friends in the county, where he spent his entire life. He was of a jovial and sunny disposition and although sorely afflicted following the accident, he was never known to complain and did not let his trouble mar his cheerful demeanor. For the past several years Mr. Hughes represented a firm that manufactured metal corn cribs, granaries, and poultry houses.
