After a time, my father went to work as a butcher for a mine company in Radley, Kansas, where I was born. Then he opened his own butcher shop on the west side of Third and Broadway in Pittsburg. The street cars were still running, and Great-grandpa Pike couldn't stay away from my dad. After all, he considered him the baby of his family as he had raised him since his daughter died. My father would call my mother on the phone and ask her if she had a chicken she could fix for dinner and any chocolate marshmallow cookies. My mother would laugh and tell him to bring Great-grandpa Pike home with him. My great-grandfather didn't want to hurt the rest of the women's feelings because he went to my dad's house for dinner. He told them Rachel was surely extravagant serving "Sunday Dinner" in the middle of the week. Nobody ever had any bad feelings about his spending so much time at the Carltons since they knew how close they were. My dad then sold the shop in Pittsburg and bought a butcher shop in Lamar, Missouri. My father had to go to Pittsburg once or twice a week for supplies for his shop. He always stopped to see Great-grandpa Pike. He then sold the butcher shop and bought the first General Motors car agency west of the Mississippi River. It was after our trip to see my grandfather in Colorado that a doctor told my father that he had appendicitis. In those days, that diagnosis amounted to the same thing as twenty years ago, telling someone that they had cancer. Then my father started to get his affairs in order. He put off the operation until he sold the car agency. He figured my mother would have enough money in the bank to last until my sister was 18 years old. The only trouble was he had delayed too long and his appendix burst and peritonitis set in. The doctor operated and he left orders that under no circumstances was my father to be given a hypo. His body had to fight the poison. My father became restless in the night and a nurse gave him a hypo to quiet him. His body quit fighting the infection. At seven o'clock in the morning, a friend brought us kids to the hospital. When we were under the window of my father's room, we heard our mother scream as my father quit breathing. When we got inside the hospital, the story was already out that a nurse had given the wrong medicine and a man died. My father's death was a blow to Great-grandfather Pike. His beloved wife Sarah and his pride and joy Addie were both dead. His farm had been taken to provide right of way for a railroad. Now the final blow was his daughter's only son that he loved and had taught so much had been taken. He was worried what would happen to the Carlton children.
