One of my earliest memories of my mother was the Decoration (Memorial) Day ritual after my father's death in 1919. My brother was six years old, I was eight, and my sister was eleven. My mother had grown up with the "Old Country Way" that required you to decorate graves and she thought that everybody else should do it also. We got up before 6:00 AM, dressed, got the flower bouquets ready, and caught the first street car to Highland Park Cemetery to decorate the graves. We then walked to Mount Olive Cemetery and decorated family graves there. She would look at graves of friends of hers. If no one had decorated the graves, she would say, "Nobody thought enough of them to put a flower on their grave." She talked to friends who were also decorating their graves. We then walked back to Highland Park Cemetery to see what graves had flowers on them. We stayed in the cemetery until about noon. Then she wanted to see who had visited Mount Olive Cemetery. I can remember how tired we were from all of that walking. You better believe we were one happy bunch to know that the street car ran right in front of our house and we wouldn't need to walk any more. We were lucky if we got home before one o'clock. Breakfast at six o'clock and lunch at one o'clock ensured a hungry bunch for lunch. (This is why my father wanted to be cremated. Alan Carlton) It was in 1923 that the street cars quit running. Since we did not have a car, we had no way to get to the cemetery unless someone volunteered to give us a ride. Knowing how my mother felt about Decoration Day and the care of graves, it makes me uncomfortable to think about nobody caring for the graves from now on. I don't remember much about the four years after my father's death. I guess I was too young to really know what was going on the first year, but my sister remembered. I remember a few times when whatever was fixed for dinner didn't seem to go far enough. My mother told us to "fill up on bread." It was homemade bread and that was an acceptable substitute. The wonderful thing about it all was after my mother told us we all had to help support the family, we accepted it. We never thought of ourselves as being poor. We didn't think helping support ourselves strange since we no longer had a father to do it for us.
