OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Thursday, February 10, 1910 EARL SHORE KILLED, STRUCK BY TREE Earl Shore, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Shore, of Pleasant township, was instantly killed while working near his home last Thursday morning, by a falling tree striking him as it fell. Young Shore was working with his father and a few other men cutting trees to be sawed in the saw mill near Earl's home. He and Guy Morehead had just cut a big maple tree half through, and sawed through from the other side. As the tree started to fall, both young men ran in a diagonal direction, as is usual with wood choppers, but by some strange mischance the limbs of the tree caught in the nearby trees, and the end of the trunk was jerked backward. With deadly certainty it followed Shore like a flash, struck him squarely on the back of the head, crushing in his skull and killing him instantly, at the same time throwing him forward on the ground. With demonic certainty the tree then followed him and fell squarely on top of him as he fell, crushing him flat into the half frozen groung, and breaking nearly every bone in the upper part of his body. Sherman Shore had left just a moment before with a load of logs for the mill, two hundred yards away, and he was called back immediately, but the tree was so heavy that two men could not budge it, even with logging tools. It required several men to rescue the poor maimed body, and it was carried tenderly home to his young wife and babe, whom he had left but a little while before, full of life and hope, and with never a thought of lurking death. The editor of this paper held Earl Shore as a personal friend. We have known him for years as a clean and high-minded young man, energetic, thrifty and honorable. He was the only child of Sherman Shore and wife, and besides them he leaves to mourn their terrible loss a young wife and a baby daughter sixteen months old. The whole county was shocked by the awfulness of the tragedy, and the sincere sympathy of all is extended to the stricken ones. Funeral services were held at Zion church on Saturday at twelve o'clock, conducted by Rev. Tennant, and the funeral was the largest ever held at Zion. Earl Shore was born April 11, 1886, in English township, and grew to manhood in this county. On May 23, 1907, he was married to Etta Umbenhower, daughter of of Mr. And Mrs. W. A. Umbenhower. To her and to the other sorrowing relatives the sympathy of all their friends is extended.
