He was not only one of the pioneers of the country but probably the oldest man in the county, though it is said that he did not know his exact age, some believing him to be past ninety though relatives say he was but 83, But he was a veteran of the Mexican war, and some of the old men now in the community say that Eb was an old man when they were young. "Uncle Eb" was a mechanic by nature and along this line followed a number of pursuits. He was a blacksmith by trade, but did carpenter work and run portable and stationary engines, etc., for several years being town pumper at Coon Rapids. When he came to Iowa he followed both blacksmithing and farming. Postmaster Steele saying that at this time he had his black smith shop in a "dug out," a large excavation made in a hill on what is now Charley Anderson's farm in Audubon county. This was forty years ago. "Uncle Eb" was a likeable character. He was of social disposition; enjoyed his friends and even at his advanced age took great pleasure telling and hearing jokes and stories, having a keen appreciation of wit and humor. Everybody liked him. He had no complaints to make of the ups and downs of life, and "Uncle Eb" had his share of them. Of late years, he made his home with his daughter and son-in-law, S. P. Galloway at whose home he died after a brief illness, the sands of life having run out, laying down life's burdens peacefully The funeral was conducted by Rev. Miller at the Christian church Tuesday afternoon. Ebbert Sutton was born in Ohio, 1828, died at the home of his daughter, Laura Galloway, north of Coon Rapids, November 26, 1911, at the age of 83 years, 4 months, 19 days. When a boy he moved with his parents to Pontiac, Michigan, later to DeKolk, Illinois,where he was married to Mary Ann Rogers. To this Union were born three children, Chas. E. Sutton of Chicago, Illinois, Mrs. Laura Galloway and Mrs. Jesse Pike both of Coon Rapids. When a boy of 18 he enlisted in the Mexican war. When the war ended he was in the hospital at New Orleans from sickness. He was a resident of Coon Rapids and vicinity for about forty years, the larger part of this time being spent on a farm, the one now owned by Charles Anderson. He was baptized into the Christian church in 1903 during the protracted meeting held by Evangelist Stout. The funeral was well attended by old settlers and the Grand Army veterans.
