Description	:	Eben Bailey Hawthorne, second son of William Eben and Annie Esther Hawthorne, was born June 2, 1903, at their county home eight miles morthwest of Eureka. He departed this life Wednesday evening July 11, 1951, having reached the age of 48 years, 1 month and 9 days. On June 29, 1924 he was united in marriage with Violet G. Wilson. Beside his wife Violet, and his three children, Jerrold, David and Marilou, he is survived by his father W.E. Hawthorne, one brother, William David and two sisters, Agnes Elizabeth and Gladys Esther. There also remain a number of uncles and cousins as well as many close friends. Among friends and relatives he usually went by the name of Jack. His religious faith was that of Quakers or "Friends". In this he traced his succession back to Wm. Penn of colonial times. Funeral services was held Sunday at 3:30 from Baird Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Arthur Angershach. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. Jack drowned while trying to rescue people on the Cottonwood River in Chase County, near Strong City. On request of the Kansas National Guard for large boats, Hawthorne loaded his 20 foot 1600 pound boat and took it to Strong City, Wednesday morning to assist in the rescue work. Many rescues had been made by Hawthorne before the fatal accident. At the time of the accident he and his companions were going on a rescue Howard's aunt who was stranded in a house. Gus Howard of Cottonwood Falls and Jack Hawthorne both drowned. A third man Larry Smith of Eureka was able to catch a tree and be rescued later by a boat.
