Note:If Elder Enoch Place's journal entry & 1840 census is correct than Ebenezer had a 2nd wife and two daughters by the second wife for a total of three daughter living at time of his death. Note:Elder Enoch Place left early on the morning of June 10th for the NH yearly meeting in Weare, NH so could not preach at or attend the funeral of Ebenezer HAYES. John HAYES of Dover, NH, 1936, p.111-112 43 EBENEZER-4 HAYES (Paul-3, John-2, John-1), born 6 Oct. 1757 in Barrington, N.H.; died 27 June 1826 in Strafford, N.H. (family record; Portsmouth, N.H. Journal of 8 July 1826 adds "by suicide"). Under date 29 June 1826, Elder Enoch HAYES Place made the entry in his Journal, "I went to the funeral of Mr. E. HAYES * * * over 400 Present"; family buried in the old Methodist Church Yard at "Crown Point," Strafford; married 31 Oct. 1782 by Rev. Joseph Haven of Rochester to PHOEBE-6 HUCKINS (John-5-4, Robert-3, James-2, Robert-l) of Strafford. (Henry Winthrop Hardon, "Huckins Family," 1916, p. 16; also, "History of Rochester," ii:608). She was born 16 Dec. 1762 and died 16 NIay 1839. Ebenezer HAYES lived on a farm at "Crown Point," a section of the town of Strafford, so named by Revolutionary War soldiers who had served in the New York campaign at Crown Point. His father's will of 1776 bequeathed to him 100 acres of land in Barrington (later Strafford) "as well as one yoke of oxen when he shall become 21 years of age." This land was part of the land his father bought of Josiah Clark. He had 100 acres on the east side of the highway and his brother Samuel lOO acres on the west side. In the U.S. Census of 1790 he was head of a family consisting of one male over 16 yrs., 1 male under 16, and 3 females. He was drawn on Jury duty 8 Aug. 1785, and elected surveyor of highways 28 Mar. 1792. His name appears on the muster roll and pay roll of officers and soldiers paid by Stephen Evans to reinforce the continental army in the State of New York, or elsewhere, 17 Dec. 1776 (State Papers, xiv:446-447), and on the pay roll of Capt. Samuel Wallingford's Company, Col. David Oilman's Regiment, from 5 Dec. 1776 to 15 March 1777 (ibid. xiv:540-541). His will proved 17 July 1826 mentions his wife and nine children. MARY-5 HAYES, b. 15 Dec. 1788; m. 2 July 1818 Samuel-5 Ham (Clement-4, Daniel-3, Joseph-2, John-1) of Somersworth, N.H. (NHVR), son of Clement and Margaret (Roberts) Ham. He was born in 1787 and died in 1825 (Dr. John R. Ham ms.) Children: CLEMENT[6] HAM, b. 28 May 1819; m. Mary Crook of Great Falls, N.H. PHEBE[6], b. 21 Oct. 1821; m. J. There is said to have been another son who died in infancy. John HAYES of Dover, NH, 1936, p.204 135 EBENEZER-5 HAYES (Ebenezer-4, Paul-3, John-2, John-1), born 16 May 1794 in Strafford, N.H.; died 8 June 1846 in Strafford (record of his dau. Mrs. John T . Bickford). Elder Enoch HAYES Place records in his Journal under this date: "Went to Crown Point [Strafford] visited and prayed with Bro. Ebenezer HAYES who will never live to see the sun rise again. He has a wife and three daughters." He was married 16 Sept. 1827 (int. 8 July 1827, Alton Town Book) by Elder Thomas Flanders, Jr. in Alton, N.H., to MARGARET-6 HAYES (Lemuel-5, Joseph-4, Paul-3, John-2, John-l), who was born 26 Apr. 1802 in Alton and was living at the age of 87 with her daughter Mrs. John T. Bickford of Farmington, N.H. Her mental faculties were said to be unimpaired. She married (2) 14 Mar. 1849 in Rochester, William Holmes of Strafford. Ebenezer lived on the homestead in Strafford with his brother John. He enlisted in the War of 1812 in Capt. Paul Montgomery's Company, serving as a private from 12 Sept. to 29 Sept. 1814 (Adjutant General's Report, New Hampshire, 1868, p. 195). Inventory and adm. of estate in Strafford County Probate, 50:312; 62:103. Children by first wife, born in Strafford, N.H.: PHOEBE-6 HAYES, b. 23 Nov. 1828 (NHVR); m. 17 Mar. 1853 John T. She is listed in Somersworth Census of 1850 age 17. John HAYES of Dover, NH, 1936, p.198-199 128 LEMUEL-5 HAYES (Joseph-4, Paul-3, John-2, John-1), born 13 July 1777 in a part of Barrington, now Strafford, N.H.; died 26 Apr. 1836 (Bible of late Sidney B. HAYES of East Rochester, N.H.); married 1 Jan. 1800 his second cousin ABIGAIL-5 HAYES (Daniel-4, Ichabod-3, Ichabod-2, John-1), who was born 31 Dec. 1779 in Rochester (now Farmington) and died 13 Jan. 1834, ae. 55 yrs., in Alton N.H. " Abigail possessed those social qualities, generous sensibilities, and high moral sentiments which make a woman of the highest order." She is said to have been a woman of unusual beauty of feature and bearing. Lemuel HAYES lived on a farm, adjoining his brother David's in Alton, N.H. He was a shoe-maker and tanner by trade. His will, drawn 13 July 1835 and proved 14 May 1836, gave to married daughters Margaret and Mercy, a small sum of money besides "property named in a schedule of June 6, 1835"; to daughters Hannah, Lydia, and Elizabeth W., use of "west foreroom" and chamber over it, and property according to the 1835 schedule, with additional items if they married. The schedule included a household equipment of furniture with such pieces as a "hardwood bureau well painted and brass'd off in good stile," a half-high bedstead and a common bedstead with a "sufficiency of bedding of woolen and cotton to dress 2 beds comfortably for winter and summer," chairs, tables, spinning wheels; to son Joseph E., $300, and fifty dollar yoke of oxen when 21 yrs. of age, 6 mos. "schooling under Thomas Tash, Esqr at New Durham or at some Academy," also 2 "suits of decent clothing for winters wear and 1 suit of handsome clothing for summer wear provided he continue to labor on the farm until he is 21 but if he goes away $12 to be deducted for every months absence until he is 21," also he is given privilege of town school every winter in district No. 4; to son Daniel, all real estate, stock, furniture, and residue not disposed of; to grandson Daniel H. Stanton, provided he continue on the farm umtil 21, a "sixty dollar yoke of oxen, privilege at "inter town school, 3 mos. at some respectable Academy and 2 suits of clothes." (2) 14 Mar. 1849 in Rochester Willialn Holmes of Strafford. At the age of 87 yrs. she was living at the home of her daughter Mrs. John T. Bickford of Farmington. HANNAH-6 HAYES, b. 27 Sept. 1803 (NHVR); d. Nov. 1879 in Fairfield, Iowa; m. William Goodwin of Malone, N.Y.; removed to Fairfield, IA; no children. MERCY-6 HAYES, b. 26 June 1805 (NHVR); m. Ezekiel Stanton of Strafford, N.H.; settled near Malone, N.Y.; removed to Fairfield, Iowa. Had a large family, three sons in the Union army, one of whom, D. H.[7] STANTON lived in Malone, N.Y., in 1888. LYDIA-6 HAYES, b. 23 Jan. 1807 (NHVR); d. 15 Feb. 1882, ae. 76y. 23d., a widow; m. 3 Mar. 1847 in Gilmanton, Jacob K. Glidden of Alton (Dover Enquirer of 20 Apr. 1847), son of Robert and Polly Glidden. He was born 1 May 1815 and died 8 Sept. 1873. His will, made 21 Oct. 1868 and proved in Laconia 18 Dec. 1873 mentions wife Lydia and dau. ABBIE M. [7] DORE (b. abt. 1848) who m. Charles W.
