"The bosom friend, the mother kind, Was call'd by Heaven's decree, To leave her earthly friends, behind Till death shall set them free." +++++ John HAYES of Dover, NH, 1936, p.111-112 43 EBENEZER-4 HAYES (Paul-3, John-2, John-1), born 6 Oct. 1757 in Barrington, N.H.; died 27 June 1826 in Strafford, N.H. (family record; Portsmouth, N.H. Journal of 8 July 1826 adds "by suicide"). Under date 29 June 1826, Elder Enoch HAYES Place made the entry in his Journal, "I went to the funeral of Mr. E. HAYES * * * over 400 Present"; family buried in the old Methodist Church Yard at "Crown Point," Strafford; married 31 Oct. 1782 by Rev. Joseph Haven of Rochester to PHOEBE-6 HUCKINS (John-5-4, Robert-3, James-2, Robert-l) of Strafford. (Henry Winthrop Hardon, "Huckins Family," 1916, p. 16; also, "History of Rochester," ii:608). She was born 16 Dec. 1762 and died 16 NIay 1839. Ebenezer HAYES lived on a farm at "Crown Point," a section of the town of Strafford, so named by Revolutionary War soldiers who had served in the New York campaign at Crown Point. His father's will of 1776 bequeathed to him 100 acres of land in Barrington (later Strafford) "as well as one yoke of oxen when he shall become 21 years of age." This land was part of the land his father bought of Josiah Clark. He had 100 acres on the east side of the highway and his brother Samuel lOO acres on the west side. In the U.S. Census of 1790 he was head of a family consisting of one male over 16 yrs., 1 male under 16, and 3 females. He was drawn on Jury duty 8 Aug. 1785, and elected surveyor of highways 28 Mar. 1792. His name appears on the muster roll and pay roll of officers and soldiers paid by Stephen Evans to reinforce the continental army in the State of New York, or elsewhere, 17 Dec. 1776 (State Papers, xiv:446-447), and on the pay roll of Capt. Samuel Wallingford's Company, Col. David Oilman's Regiment, from 5 Dec. 1776 to 15 March 1777 (ibid. xiv:540-541). His will proved 17 July 1826 mentions his wife and nine children. MARY-5 HAYES, b. 15 Dec. 1788; m. 2 July 1818 Samuel-5 Ham (Clement-4, Daniel-3, Joseph-2, John-1) of Somersworth, N.H. (NHVR), son of Clement and Margaret (Roberts) Ham. He was born in 1787 and died in 1825 (Dr. John R. Ham ms.) Children: CLEMENT[6] HAM, b. 28 May 1819; m. Mary Crook of Great Falls, N.H. PHEBE[6], b. 21 Oct. 1821; m. J. There is said to have been another son who died in infancy. John HAYES of Dover, NH, 1936, p.203 134 MILES-5 HAYES (Ebenezer-4, Paul-3, John-2, John-l), born 21 June 1791 in Strafford, N.H.; died 21 Feb. 1867 in Barnstead, N.H. (Family records of Capt. John G. Holmes of Strafford Blue Hills.) He was married (1) 29 Aug. 1811 by Rev. Joseph Haven of Rochester to ELIZABETH ("Betsey") SWAIN of Strafford. Elder Enoch HAYES Place in his Journal, Wed. 28 July 1824, records: "I preached at the funeral of Betsey, wife of Mr. Miles HAYES of Alton." He was married (2) 7 Jan. 1827 by Rev. Joseph Boodey in Alton to ABIGAIL D. CLEMENTS, daughter of Enoch and Sarah (Swain) Clements. She was born in 1802 and died 12 Apr. 1829, ae. 25 yrs. (Dover Gazette and Strafford Advertiser of 5 May 1829). He was married (3) 29 Apr. 1832 by Rev. Enos George to ABIGAIL COLLINS of Barnstead, N.H. (N.H.V.R.). He married (4) before 1850 (as she occurs on his Barnstead census of 1850, age 42, and 1860, age 51) ELIZABETH PINKHAM, daughter of Daniel and Annie (Garland) Pinkham of New Durham ("Garland Genealogy," pp. 27-28). Miles HAYES was a farmer in Alton and Barnstead, N.H. His residence at the time of his third marriage (1832) was given as Alton, and he is recorded in the census of Barnstead for 1850 and 1860 with wife Betsey. Children by first wife: PHOEBE-6 HAYES, b. about 1812; d. about 1876; m. Charles Merriam of Boston; had son CHARLES RUSSELL[7] MERRIAM who lived in New York City and had two sons (record of her niece, Mrs. Alice Evans Rowe). ABIGAIL-6 HAYES, b. about 1813; d. young; unm. 355 EBENEZER-6 HAYES, b. 1815. SABINA-6 HAYES, m. Jeremiah Dow Evans of New Durham and Rochester, who married as his second wife Deborah Leah[7] Kimball, dau. of Tamson-6 HAYES (Ichabod5-4-3-2, John-l). Children: 1. BETSEY ABIGAIL[7] EVANS, d. in infancy. 2. HANNAH JANE[7] EVANS, m. Henry Jones of Gilmanton Iron Works. Children: (1) JESSIE NASON[8] JONES, d. unm. (2) NATHANIEL EVANS[8]. 3. CHARLES MERRIAM[7] EVANS, b. 1849; m. widow Amanda Clough; no children. 4. ANNA ELIZABETH[7] EVANS, b. 1853; d. abt. 1880, unm. 5. FRANK MlLES[7] EVANS, b. 1857; d. abt. 1881, unm. 6. ALICE SABINA[7] EVANS, b. 1863; m. Augustus H. Rowe of 120 Hemenway St., Boston, Mass. (1907); no children. She furnished data on this family.
