It is a grief for the loss of a man whose memory will remain dear to the hearts of every man, woman and child in Blue Hill. It was in the death of Ed. H. Funke Sr. that the visitation of this great grief came. After a long and heroic fight against the grim reaper, his spirit was called Monday evening at 8:30 and all that was mortal in his life passed out. For over a year, the good man fought for a restoration of health and it was thought after winning his first battle, after having been near death’s door at that time, that perhaps his life might be spared for many years to come, but a few weeks ago the dread symptoms reappeared and in spite of all that medical skill could do; there came no rallying response, and Monday evening the struggle came to an end. Ed Funke Sr. was a man among men. He had waged just such a battle as many another early settler had waged in this country, and had endured all its hardships. His rugged integrity, honesty and sobriety, together with his industry, had gained for him the success in life that was his due. He was a man of kindly ways and deepest affection. He loved his fellow men and in turn was loved by them. He loved his home and he had a keen interest in the welfare of it. It was his great des_____ to give his children the full home fits of an education and in doing so he has been blessed in the fruits education brought in the lives of those children. After years of labor in the mercantile field in this city, he turned over to his son Ed. H. Jr., his well known and well established business two years ago this spring, thinking that he would take life a little easier. It was a few months later that ill health made its appearance since which time, he bravely bore the affliction that pressed upon him. It is a great sorrow that now hangs over the house where a father’s council and good cheer will radiate no more. It is a sorrow in which the whole community jo____. To the bereaved wife and children let there come the full knowledge that the husband and father lived truly and well the mission he had in this life that he left behind him, rounded out to its fullness every possible achievement that mortal man has a right to be proud of for Ed. H. Funke lived the cart of a man, conscious of his duty to his family, his sorrow given his country and God. Blue Hill Leader 10 Mar 1922 Front page Obituary Ed H. Funke Sr. was born June 12, 1858 at Varal, Oldenburg, Germany. He was married to Johanna Haskin, February __, 1882 and one year later came to America and direct to Nebraska, where he had lived the last 4_ years. Ten children were born to this union, ____________ whom together with the _________ left to mourn. They are nam__ ______ Mrs. Minnie Dickinson of ________ , Henry Funke, of Sacramento, California; Edward, Carolyn and Eimo, Emma, Anton, and Jo___ all of the old home town. Mr. Funke for many years had been in the mercantile business, first at Lawrence and then later at Blue Hill. Three years ago ill health first visited him and he sold out his business to his son Ed. Jr., hoping _____at _e retirement might, bring _____ a _____wal of health, but it proved____ vail and on the 6th day of __arch, ___922, he was summoned___ death. The funeral services were conducted from St. Paul’s Lutheran church in Blue Hill, being conducted by Rev. R__ter of that church. The pallbearers were old business friends, namely: Fred Hopka, W.W. __iggi_s, Jacob Goll, E. McBride, ____ Pe__ger, and Otto Miller. The body was laid to rest in the Blue Hill Cemetery. Lawrence Notes From Locomotive Word came to Lawrence Tuesday morning that Ed Funke, Sr., of Blue Hill, died Monday night. Deceased was well known in Lawrence, where some eighteen years ago he conducted a general mercantile business here in partnership with W.A. Carswell. For a number of years with his son Ed they have conducted a general store at Blue Hill.
