Edgar George Werling was born near Pomeroy, O., Feb. 22, 1895, and died the 25th day of December, Christmas morning, 1918, aged 23 years, 10 month and 3 days. When his parents had about completed plans to move to Iowa in 1895 the mother was taken sick and died, leaving the father two children--Edgar, an infant 5 days old, and Otto Frederick, a lad of but a few years. After the death of the mother the father and children came to Iowa with the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Werling, with whom they made their home until he was taken into the home of his uncle, Abram Werling, who a few years ago moved to Rochester, Minn., and from which place Edgar enlisted in the service of his country May 25, 1918. He was sent to Camp Kearney and from there to Camp Mills, N. Y., from which place he was ordered to France, where he arrived Aug. 20, and was immediately ordered to the front, being stationed at Argonne Forest, Headquarters Company, 308th Infantry, Signal Platoon, 77th Division. Having acquired proficiency as a wireless operator he was assigned to that service, in which he served most of his time. This placed him in the most dangerous position, the enemy making special effort to destroy the allies' information station, consequently he and his comrades were heavily shelled and gassed. He was trapped and held in the trench for fourteen days without an adequate amount of food and fresh water. Compelled to drink the trench water, which had been poisoned by gas, he became sick and was taken to the hospital Nov. 2 After a short course of treatment there he improved sufficiently to undertake the voyage home, which did not agree with him, however, and he grew worse. On his arrival in this country he was sent, on Nov. 30, to Embarkation hospital, Camp Stewart, Newport News, Va., where he received the best of treatment. Strong hopes for his recovery were entertained up to a short time before he died. His last days were comforted by the presence of his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Abram Werling, the latter being with him when he passed away. Edgar was a young man of fine presence and sterling qualities, and highly esteemed by all who knew him. That the American Express company held his position open for him on his return is evidence of the high regard in which he was held by those who had business relations with him. On Easter, March 31, 1907, Edgar united with the Lutheran church of Tipton by confirmation under Pastor Rizer. It is therefore very fitting that after such a splendid record as he had made in the business world and having made the supreme sacrifice for his country that the obsequies sacred to his memory be held in the sacred place where he enlisted in the great army of King Emanuel. Peace to his ashes, and may his gallant, loyal and noble soul awake to immortal glory and enjoy the relief ties of the promised reward eternal. The funeral service was held in the Lutheran church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. H. A. Wolfe. A beautiful duet, "The Blue Star in the Window," was sung by Mary and Ruby Wolfe. Interment was made in Masonic cemetery, six young men recently discharged from military service acting as pallbearers.
