Born Aug. 13, 1889, at Galena, Ill., Mr. Barrett came to Big Sandy in 1910 to assist his uncle, Edgar B. Newhall, in the McNamara and Marlow department store. Later the same year, when C. J. McNamara and T. A. Marlow of Helena established the Northern Montana State Bank, Ed became its Assistant Cashier. In that capacity he accepted the bank's first deposit made by Mrs. Paul Schwartz. Thus began a banking career of 44 years during which time he served the entire community faithfully as a banker, counselor and friend in need. He was appointed to the position of Cashier in 1934 and resigned on Jan. 1, 1954, because he realized his health was failing. During his many years in Big Sandy, Ed contributed much of his time to community affairs. He served the city as mayor for a term and as City Treasurer for 30 years. He was instrumental in forming the first City Band and was an active member of the Fire Department. He was a member of the Treasure Lodge No. 95 and the Elks Lodge of Havre. Although he was Eastern born, Ed enjoyed Western people and Western ways and was in his glory angling for trout from one of the local streams. During later years pressure of his ever-growing business kept him from pursuing the fishing and hunting he enjoyed he so much enjoyed. Survivors include his widow, Ruth Green Barrett; a son, Allen of Alameda, Calif.; a daughter, Virginia Robbins and grandson, Tommy Robbins of Oroville, Wash.; a brother, Lawrence H. Barrett of Chicago; and a sister, Virginia Barrett of Galena, Ill.
