Gene was born Virginia Hope Barrett on August 24, 1916, in Big Sandy, MT, to Edgar and Ruth (Green) Barrett. Her family nickname in the early years was "Genie" and as an adult it became "Gene", so she legally changed her name to Gene. She graduated from Big Sandy High School in 1932, at the age of 16 and graduated from Montana State University in 1938, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration and a Teacher's Certificate. Following graduation, Gene taught business classes; typing, bookkeeping, accounting, shorthand, business machines and office practices at high schools in Victor and Klein, MT. She also worked at the Minors and Merchants Bank in Roundup, MT. In 1944, Gene accompanied a friend, who's husband was away serving in the Navy, to Seattle to explore new opportunities. She became the first female Bank Teller for the National Bank of Commerce in Seattle. Dub Lewis, a loan officer at the bank, introduced Gene to his brother-in-law, Bynum Robbins, who lived in Omak. On February 12, 1949, she was married to Bynum in Wenatchee. She and Bynum made their home in Omak, where he worked for Omak Bottling Company, a pop and beer distributorship. Gene was a visiting case worker for the state welfare department. On May 1, 1951, their son, Tom, was born. In 1954, Bynum and his brother, became partners in the Pastime Tavern in Oroville. They relocated to Oroville at a lakefront home on Boundary Point. Gene managed the Oroville office of the James M. Green Insurance Agency. Seven years later, the High School Commercial teacher, left mid-year and Gene was asked to take the teaching position to fill out the year. She taught Commercial Subjects and was the advisor for the year book at the High School for the next seven years. As the Commercial teacher, Gene held very high standards for the students, since she was able to type one hundred word per minute on a manual typewriter with no errors. She also was very efficient with shorthand and used it throughout her working life. During the time she was teaching, Gene was very active with student programs, athletic events and other related activities that she enjoyed very much. After selling the tavern in 1966, Bynum and Gene purchased an automobile dealership in Tonasket, that became known as Robbins Chevrolet. Gene handled the bookkeeping for the business for several years. In the early 1970's, when the Oroville High School Secretary became ill, Gene filled the position temporarily and remained there through the 70's. The Chevrolet Dealership was sold in 1974, to Leonard Hedlund, who remains the current owner. Bynum enjoyed selling cars and remained as a salesman through the 70's. During the time she lived in Oroville, Gene was a very active member of the Oro Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She is a Past Worthy Matron of the Oroville Chapter. She was Mother Advisor for the Rainbow Girls for many years. In 1983-84, Gene was a state officer for the Order of the Eastern Star. As "Grand Ruth", she and Bynum, who was a Mason, traveled with the Eastern Star Grand Family, participating with many social activities and events, visiting many different chapters. Gene made many life long friends in the Eastern Star and thoroughly enjoyed that experience. In 1994, Gene and Bynum moved to Wenatchee to be closer to their son, Tom and his family. At that time, she became associated with the Astral Chapter of the Eastern Star in Wenatchee. In 1997, she moved into the Colonial Vista Retirement Apartments. At Colonial Vista she was involved in many activities and volunteered in the office. In 2005, she became less active and moved into the Colonial Vista Care Center. Throughout her life, Gene was a very friendly and outgoing person that always put others' needs ahead of her own. She was the first to go out of her way to provide assistance to friends and family members when they were in need. She moved two aunts and her mother to Oroville in their final years to be closer and provide support to them. Gene loved her grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins and had close and very special relationships with them. She was always there to be a friend, provide support and assistance when needed and especially to have fun together during many special occasions. Her cousin, Bob Eckhart of Woodinville, has been as close as a brother to her. Gene and Bynum loved to entertain and have family and friends as guests to their home on Lake Osoyoos. Their home was always open and there were no strangers. She used to say, "the more, the merrier." If there were people they knew that had no place to go on a holiday, they were invited. Gene's gamily and friends have many wonderful memories of the great times we had at Gene and Bynum's, or Grandma and Grandpa's house. Gene's family and friends will miss her a great deal, but we will always have the special memories of the times we were able to spend with her. She will remain with us forever. Gene was preceded in death by her husband, Bynum in 1998; father, Edgar Barrett in 1954; mother, Ruth Barrett in 1978; brother, Allen Barrett in 1986; and infant brother, Harry Barrett in 1923. She is survived by her son, Tom and Leah Robbins of Wenatchee; stepson, Chuck and Norine Robbins of Eatonville; stepdaughter, Marlene Bosler of Arlington; eight grandchildren, Ed Bosler, Leslie Garland, Julie Hoiby, David Robbins, John Robbins, Daniel Robbins, Tara Paul and Rochelle Roper; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by very special friends, Louise Anderson, who she enjoyed during her years in Oroville and at Colonial Vista and Tish Robbins, who has taken very special care of her. A Celebration of Gene's Life will be held at a Memorial Service at Jones and Jones Funeral Home, 21 South Chelan Avenue, Wenatchee, on Friday, August 3, 2007, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a reception hosted by the Astral Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star at the Masonic Center at 811 North Chelan Avenue. A Graveside Service for family and friends will be held at the Okanogan Cemetery on Saturday, August 4, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. Donations may be made In Memoriam to the Apple Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, 12 Orondo, Wenatchee. Pastor Kel Groseclose will be officiating and the Astral Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star will perform a Memorial Service. Arrangements are by Jones and Jones Funeral Directors of Wenatchee.
