Read More	SWIFT, Edgar ~ CIVIL WAR VETERAN ~ 1825 1899 Grace Hill Hawarden Sioux Co B 74 IL Inf, GAR --------- Hiram (with his grave #) is his son. --------------------------------- Hawarden Independent, Sioux County, Iowa May 25, 1899 Edgar Swift, one of the old and well-known residents of Hawarden died early Monday morning after an illness of several months, during which time he was a great sufferer. He was afflicted with gangrene in the left foot and at a consultation of physicians last Friday, it was decided to amputate the leg just above the ankle in hopes of relieving the great pain and as the only alternative of saving his life. Doctor McCarty was assisted in the operation by Drs. Wilson of Hudson and Wendt of Canton. Although everything possible was done for him, he passed away Monday morning. He was born in Livingston County, New York December 21, 1825. At the age of fifteen he moved with his parents to Winnebago County, Illinois where he grew to manhood. He was married in 1850 to Miss C (Catherine) Graves, and to them was born one son Leonard. She died in 1853 and in 1854 he married Miss Lena Billick, who survives hm. Catherine may have died in connection to the birth of Mary but Mary died one month and 14 days after her mother. His war record was a remarkable one, but he was not given to boasting of it. He enlisted in Co B 74th Illinois Infantry and participated in the battles of Perryville, Stone River, Chickamauga, Dalton, Dallas Altoona, Resaca, Mission Ridge, Kennesaw Mountains, Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta, Jonesboro, Lovejoy Station, Spring Hill , Franklin and the first and second battles of Nashville. He was wounded at Lovejoy Station, but was in the hospital only four weeks when he again joined his regiment. He was honorably discharged January 10, 1865. He came to Hawarden in 1886 and has since resided here. He was upright in all of his dealings, true to his friends, and highly respected by all who knew him. The G.A.R. Post had charge of the obsequies, and the funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Kirk. His wife and six children are left to mourn his departure. ------------ The Hulse Cemetery in Winnebago County Illinois holds many of the Swift -Billick relatives. In Row 8 Lot 60 where Catherine, his first wife lies are in order- Oscar and Oliver children of Edwin, twin brother of Edgar; Zebulon and Abigail Perkins Swift, Edgar's parents, Zebulon Jr, his brother, next is Catherine and their daughter Mary C., Edgar's first wife. Catherine may have died in connection to the birth of Mary but Mary died one month and 14 days after her mother. Next to them lie four children who all died a few months old. They are the children of his brother Edwin and Lena Billick who was a sister of Edgars second wife, both daughters of William and Eliza Marsh Billick. Next to these children are buried another child of Edwin and Louisa, Adalaska 2yrs old who died in 1860. I have copies of two letters that Edgar wrote to his Mother on the Civil War battlefield. They were published in a Book on the Graham/Billick families by Lyle Giesen who died a few years ago. I will be glad to share them with anyone who wishes a copy.
