Description	:	Lovell Swift a long time resident of this city and community, passed away at his home in the east part of Hawarden at 9:30 last Friday morning. Mr. Swift had been in failing health for the past year and on Wednesday evening of last week suffered a stroke and grew gradually weaker until he passed away Friday morning. Funeral services were held at the Ross Funeral Home at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon with Rev. Robert H Forrester, pastor of the Methodist church, in charge. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery. Lovell Swift was born at Pecatonica, Ill., May 28, 1859 and passed away April 19 1935, having attained the age of 75 years, 10 months and 21 days. At the age of 12 years he came to Iowa with his parents and located in Poweshiek county wher he grew to youn manhood. His father, Edgar Swift came to Sioux county in 188s and purchased land five miles north of Ireton and the following spring, Lovell Swift came to put up buildings on the farm. He made a brief trip back to Poweshiek county where on March 27, 1884, he was united in marriage with Mary Foley and they came to Sioux county the day following their marriage. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary here in March of last year. They made their home on the farm north of Ireton for a number of years and then later moved to Hawarden where he built a home in the east part of town. After residing in town for several years they again engaged in farming east of town until 1910 when they moved onto a farm in Walworth county, S.D., near Selby. A little more than twenty years ago he became lost at night in a blizzard and wandered about over the South Dakota prairie until dawn. His hands and feet were so badly frozen that he was taken to a hospital in Aberdeen where it became necessary to amputee all of one hand, a part of the other hand as well as one foot in order to save his life. He remained in the hospital for many weeks while recovering from the shock of these amputations. The family continued to live in South Dakota until 1922, when Mr. and Mrs. Swift returned to Hawarden and have made their home here practically all of that time since. He is survived by his faithful wife and nine children, all of whom were here to attend the funeral. The children are Mrs. Wm. Kircher (Doris Dot) and Mrs. Lloyd Anderson (twin Byrnece Beverly)both of Hawarden; Mrs. Lloyd Engebretson (Inez) and LeRoy, Rolla, Boyne (twin to Byrnece) and Elmer of Shelby, South Dakota, and Arch and Wyman of Mobridge, South Dakota. He also leaves one brother Anson of Brooking, South Dakota and 27 grandchildren. (Obituary given to me by Michael Swift)
