Description	:	Edith C. Sawyer, the fourth child of Joseph E. Sawyer and Nellie Dear Sawyer, was born April 15, 1881, in Otoe County, Nebr. She passed away in the Republic County Hospital, Belleville, Kan., Jan. 22, 1972 at the age of 90 years, 9 months and 7 days. Sawyer and Nellie Dear Sawyer, was born April 15, 1881, in Otoe County, Nebr. She passed away in the Republic County Hospital, Belleville, Kan., Jan. 22, 1972 at the age of 90 years, 9 months and 7 days. In the spring of 1883 the Sawyer family moved to the Kansas-line farm west of Chester where Edith lived until 1935. Since then she has lived in Chester. Edith was graduated from Chester High School with the Class of 1898. She taught rural schools in Thayer County a number of years. She enjoyed following the progress of the Chester graduating classes. She united with the Chester Methodist Church Aug. 28, 1898, and had been a continuous member ever since. She was an active worker in the church, including many years as Cradle Roll Superintendent. Edith joined the Eastern Star on May 13, 1902. During her nearly 70 years as a Star member, she held many of the offices. She served as secretary of the Chester Cemetery Association. Edith was preceded in death by her parents; her three sisters, Mrs. Mary Mosshart, Mrs. Stella Gardiner, and Miss Birdie Sawyer; and her brother, Chester. Survivors include two nieces, Miss Wilma Sawyer of Beatrice; and Mrs. Lorene Gilkeson, her husband, Harmon, and their four children of Chester; three nephews, Donald Mosshart of Ardmore, Pa.; Ivan Gardiner, Altadena, Cali.; and Kenneth Gardiner of Westport, Con., and their families also survive. Funeral services were conducted Jan. 25 by Rev. Marion Loftis of Giltner, and Rev. Opal Crounse from the Chester United Methodist Church. Mrs. Jack Long and Mrs. Maurice Mitchell sang, accompanied by Mrs. Dolan Frye, organist. Casketbearers were Frank Larkins, Edwin Hoops, Howard Reed, Walter Thoman, Kenneth Messman, Chas. Kuhlmann. Interment was made in Chester Cemetery, Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.
