Naylor, who served as president of the Red Oak Community School District Board of Education from 1961 to 1963, died Wednesday morning of cancer at the Good Samaritan Care Center. Mrs. Naylor was 74, was instrumental both in the reorganization of the Red Oak Community School District in 1959, and in passage of the bond issue in 1967 that resulted in the construction of the present Red Oak Community High School building. She also chaired the school district's Needs Assessment Committee in 1975-1976. Mrs. Naylor was born November 1, 1914, in a farm house build by her father, Elmer Bass, in 1912, in which she lived for all but 14 years of her life. She received the first eight years of her schooling in a one room schoolhouse in Garfield Township, where there was only one other student in her class, and the two of them completed four grates in two years. She graduated from Emerson High School in 1931 and attended Red Oak Junior College. She received a bachelor's degree in home economics education in 1936 from Iowa State College, where she also did graduate work. Mrs. Naylor taught vocational home economics in Elliott, Griswold, and Red Oak, retiring in 1974. Previously, she had served two years as an Extension Home Economist and two years as a Home Management Supervisor with the Farm Security Administration. She also taught adult evening school classes for Southwester Community College. Mrs. Naylor served on the Iowa State University Home Economics Advisory Council, which led to the formation of the ISU Home Economics Alumni Association. In 1977, she received the Service Key Award of the Southwest Iowa ISU Alumni Club. In 1981, she and her husband, Max, founded the Naylor Educational Aid Fund, a scholarship program for ISU students. In the community, Mrs. Naylor was a member of the Red Oak branch of the American Association of University Women since 1950, and served as president for two years. She serves as a Girl Scout leader and 4-H Club leader in the 1950's. She was a life long member of the United Methodist Church and was active in United Methodist Women which awarded her an honorary life membership. She became a member of the Monday Club's Book and Study section in 1976 and served as president in 1977. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary society for women in education. In 1977, she presented a program on "Foods of the Future" at the state Delta Kappa Gamma Convention. She was a member of the Christian Women's Club. She was married on March 24, 1940 to Max O. Naylor, who died in 1987. She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Harlan George. She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Naylor of Shawnee Mission, Kansas and Jane Haahr of Floyd, Iowa; two grandchildren, Nikolas and Lauren, Haahr, also of Floyd; and a brother, Rollin G. Bass of rural Emerson. Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 5, 1989 at the First United Methodist Church, Dr. Scott Woodworth was the officiate. nelson Boylan Funeral Chapel was in charge of the sevices.
