Born October 15, 1913 in Lawndale, North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late George Andrew Lee and Minnie McMurray Lee. Mrs Myers interrupted her schooling at High Point College to marry Earl Myers. After raising a family, she enrolled at the University of South Carolina (Main Campus, Columbia) and earned a degree in Library Science. She was Librarian at Mayewood High School for 31 years. Devoted to the school and students, she treated her profession as a ministry. When she retired in 1986, the library was named in her honor. A former student who spoke during the ceremony referred to her as a Peacemaker and recalled her efforts during integration. She was a devoted member of Shiloh United Methodist Church from 1937, when the family moved to the community to operate Shiloh Mercantile Company. Until health problems necessitated a move to Sumter in 2009, she served as church organist and directed the adult and children's choirs. She taught the Adult Sunday School Class for 50 years, served for years on the Administrative Council and as chairwoman of the Council of Ministries, was a president of the United Methodist Women and a delegate to the state conference of the church. In 1982, the church honored her for her outstanding contributions to her church, community and profession. The church recalled especially her love of gardening, noting that she had been the church florist for years, providing ferns, roses and other flowers. She was generous with her gardening skills, sharing flowers-especially her beloved roses- with schools, family, friends and anyone who needed them. Mrs. Myers was active in civic affairs throughout her life and she was a great example of the volunteer spirit. She belonged to the Farm Women's Council of Home Demonstration Clubs for years, holding local and state offices, and especially enjoyed being chairwoman of the committee publishing the S. C. Cookbook in 1953. She was a wonderful cook and shared the fruits of that skill as well, feeding her family every Sunday until she was 90 and sharing food shed harvested from her own garden throughout her life. She was a member Delta Kappa Gamma, and honorary society for Outstanding Women Educators. She was one of three people honored with a portrait unveiling and ceremony for service to the Shiloh Community when the community center was opened, and served on its board. In 1994, her name was added to the Honor Roll of Outstanding Women of Sumter County and a rose planted in her honor at the Exhibition Center. She has been the recipient of a special award presented by Sumter County Council in recognition for being a trailblazer by improving race relations in the Shiloh Community, has had a children's book published in her honor by a granddaughter, and chimes have been installed at her church in honor by a grandson. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Wednesday January 26 at Shiloh United Methodist Church.
