Daughter of Jerome Washington Vawter and Martha Charlotte Mumford OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, May 23, 1968 ASHBY - Edith Mae Ashby, daughter of Jerome Washington and Martha Charlotte Vawter, was born October 2, 1893 near the town of Oakley in Lucas County. She departed this life May 14, 1968, in the Lucas County Memorial Hospital in Chariton, at the age of 74 years, six months and 12 days. Early in life she attended church services at the Christian Church in Oakley and there she accepted Christ as her Saviour and became a member of that church. Later in life she joined the Norwood E.U.B. Church which was convenient to their location. Here she took part in church activities including the Ladies Aid. She lived her entire life in or near the Norwood Community. She was united in marriage in 1914 to Lloyd Soper, formerly of the Isle of Guernsey, England. To this union one daughter was born, Mrs. Clark (Alice) Shaw. Lloyd passed away in 1916 and Edith and her daughter lived with her parents for several years. On December 5, 1920 she was united in marriage to George Elmer Ashby. To this union were born three daughters and one son. They are Mrs. Victor (Ardys) Curtis and Mrs. Verne (Margaret) Curtis of Des Moines, and Mrs. Robert (Charlene) McKinley of Peoria, Ill.; and Mrs. Marion Ashby of Chariton. Edith will be remembered by all who knew her as a devoted wife and mother. She was always ready to be of service to her family, friends and neighbors. She especially loved fancy work and made lovely crocheted stoles and afghans for her daughters. She made many quilts, some embroidered, some pieces, and all were beautifully quilted. Some nine and one-half years ago she suffered a stroke which somewhat limited her physically but did not lessen her zest for life. Through medication and loving care she was able to enjoy many activities. She loved to visit friends and relatives and always enjoyed having company and sharing the blessings and even the sorrows of her family and friends. The day following Easter she suffered a fall which hospitalized her. She was a patient there for only 20 days before she was called home. She was patient during her illness and appreciated the loving care given by her devoted family and the loyal hospital nursing staff. She leaves to mourn her passing, her family, which includes 11 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Harold (Faye) Pennington of Norwood. A host of other relatives and friends will also greatly miss her familiar face and cheery greeting. Services were held at the Miley & Brueggemann Chapel on Friday, May 17, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev.
