ASHBY Marion Jerome Ashby was born June 4, 1928 in Norwood, Iowa, the son of George Elmer and Edith Vawter Ashby. He died Dec. 14, 1999 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 71 years. Marion attended schools in Norwood. He was a resident of Chariton prior to moving to Osceola 25 years ago. He married Norma Lee Griffin May 28, 1961 in Bethany, Mo. Throughout his life, Marion liked to fly single engine airplanes, listen to southern gospel music, and spend time with family and friends. He enjoyed an active life working at Kustom Kraft, his appliance and glass store in Osceola. Marion's special sense of humor and love of adventure were always evident. He recently learned to use a computer and treasured pictures of his grandson sent to him via e-mail. He was a member of the Chariton Masonic Lodge, Lucas County Shrine Club, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine in Altoona, and the Chariton and Osceola Eagles clubs. He is survived by his wife, Norma, of Osceola; sons, Brian Ashby of Tucson, Ariz.; and Brad and wife Jane Ashby of Omaha, Nebr.; grandson Scott Ashby of Omaha; sisters, Alice and husband Clarke Shaw, Ardys and husband Victor Curtis, Margaret and husband Vern Curtis, and Charlene and husband Bob McKinley, all of Des Moines; two nieces, Susan Curtis and Tammy Holcomb; six nephews, Dick, John and Bob Shaw, James Curtis, Randall and Phillip McKinley; and many great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a niece, Sandra Jean Shaw; and nephew, Mark Curtis. Services were held Friday, Dec. 17, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Chariton. Officiating was Father Richard J. Linter. Organist was Jean Vandevenne. Masonic services were conducted by Michael Rockhold. Interment was in the Norwood Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Marion McKinnie, Lynn Hillyer, Jim Bierbrodt, Duane Zeke, Phillip McKinley and Ken Hudson. Obituary courtesy of Charles M. Wright
