Edith was a resident of Alliance, Nebraska for the majority of her life. Edith was born on October 4, 1929, the same month as the Great Depression began in the United States. She was born to Mathias "Matt" and Bertha (Rouse) Berg in Greybull, Wyoming. Where Matt worked as a special agent for the railroad. Edith was a resident of Alliance, Nebraska for the majority of her life. Edith was born on October 4, 1929, the same month as the Great Depression began in the United States. She was born to Mathias "Matt" and Bertha (Rouse) Berg in Greybull, Wyoming. Where Matt worked as a special agent for the railroad. She was the second child born to them following her older sister, Ethel. Her younger siblings Howard, Charlie, and Ellen later joined the family as the family relocated during the Depression to McCook, Nebraska and finally settled in Alliance. The Alliance home in which the family lived is the home in which she resided on her death. In elementary school, she met her lifelong friends. She had an adventurous childhood and developed her talent for reading and writing in school. While in High School, she worked as a "soda jerk" at a drugstore in Alliance. She graduated from Alliance High School and worked as a switchboard operator. On April 10, 1949, Edith was married to Myron Edward "Mike" Frerichs at the Methodist Church in Alliance and began the life of the wife of a Nebraska State Patrolman and later the wife of a Box Butte County Sheriff. Mike and Edith had three children, Myron Edward "Mike" Junior, Julie, and Matt. While her husband was sheriff, she worked as the kitchen manager for the County Jail where she developed relationships with many of the inmates. They appreciated her cooking so much that some of the men were known to try to get arrested around the holidays so they could have her holiday meals. To some inmates, she was the mother figure they had never had. Edith was very active until the time of her death and had many talents. She was a volunteer for the Alliance Public Library for many years until shortly before she departed. She was a voracious reader of all types of novels, but her favorites were southern literature novels sent to her by her daughter-in-law, Beth. She also enjoyed non-fiction, historical, and political writing. Her book collection was extensive, and her books are found not only in her home but homes of friends and families. She had a talent for writing and publishing articles, short stories about growing up during the Depression and World War II, family biographies, book reviews, and many letters to the editor. She loved animals and was known to adopt any animal that came to her door. She was an excellent cook capable of producing legendary fruit pies, sugar cookies, angel-food cakes on birthdays, and complete Thanksgiving dinners without recipes. She loved to fill special requests. Her denim quilts were favorites of her grandchildren. She enjoyed genealogical research and worked with her daughter--in-law, Cathy, to trace her family's heritage to before the Revolutionary War. She was a patriotic member of the Daughter's of the American Revolution Point of Rock Chapter in Alliance. She made DAR history when she, her daughter Julie, her granddaughter Jennifer, and her great-granddaughter Jessica all joined the DAR on the same day. She was proud of her Norwegian heritage and enjoyed a trip to Norway in 2000 with her son Mike, granddaughter Jennifer, and daughter-in-law Cathy. She visited her father's family village, met distant relatives, sampled from every ice cream vendor she passed, and found Norwegian coffee to be too strong even for her liking. In 2009, she attended her first Husker Game at Memorial Stadium with many members of her family. She also enjoyed making several trips to Kentucky each year to enjoy daughter-in-law Beth's southern cooking and visit Civil War sites with her. Edith is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Myron Edward Frerichs Jr. and Catherine Sattlethight of Two Rivers, Alaska daughter and son-in-law Julie and Joseph Costello of Lingle, Wyoming, and son and daughter-in-law Matt and Beth Frerichs of Hopkinsville, Kentucky. She has five grandchildren, Jennifer (Jason) Splichal of Mitchell, Grady Costello of Lingle, Aaron (Rebekah) Costello of Rapid City, and Margaret and Taten Frerichs of Hopkinsville. She has three great-grandchildren, Jessica and Jonah Splichal of Mitchell, and Kennedy Pulliam of Gillette, WY. Her great-grandchildren were a great joy and she loved having picnics by the fountain with them as well as sending them gifts and cards. The accomplishments of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were a source of pride for her. She will also be fondly remembered by many friends and extended family. Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Mike, her parents, and her sister, Ellen. Interment of the cremains was in the Alliance Cemetery, Alliance, NE.
