Wanting to teach, a desire to teach, is not enough to create an effective teacher. She must love her students as much as she loves to teach; without love there is no understanding. She must understand her students, how to stimilate [stimulate] and motivate them, each to their own potential of learning. And she must know how to teach - how to transmit her knowledge - and most important, how to instill in her students a love of music. Such a teach was Mrs. Edith Kirkendall. The lives of literally hundreds of people in Birch Tree and surrounding communities have been touched by her love of music. She began teaching the piano before her marriage to Dr. Halley Kirkendall in 1911 and ended with lessons the day of her death September 27, 1964 at the age of 74 years. Mrs. Kirkendall had pupils of all ages, even to second generations, and each one was special to her. Her pupils have participated in church, school, and community affairs, and some have continued with music careers. The present piano teach in Birch Tree, Mrs. Beulah Lynn (Thomas) Pulliam, was a student of hers. She was very active in the music department of the Methodist Church and w as the pianist or organist for many years. Even before Birch Tree had a music department in its schools Mrs. Kirkendall arranged and assisted with the musical programs. She was a leader in establishing musical education in the area schools. Her musical talent was recognized statewide by her appointment as Grand Organist, Grand Chapter of Missouri, Order of the Eastern Star.
