Description	:	Edna H. Gaines, 88, of Sterling, died Monday, April 10, 2000 in Sterling. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 13 at the First Presbyteri an Church. Rev. Mrs. Gaines was born June 13, 1911 in Proctor to James and Ada (Walker) Hamil. She attended grade school in Proc tor, then graduated from Logan County High School in 1928. She received her BS degree from Iowa State University in 1932 with an institutional management major. She was employed for five years in the food department of the Univer sity of Michigan League in Ann Arbor, Mich. She returned to Sterling in 1937 after her marriage to Dr. Charles E. Gaines in Ann Arbor. During World War II, she taught nutrition classes and served on the Logan County Cancer Board. She was elected to the committee which set up the home rule charter for the City of Sterling. She also served for six years on the Logan County School Board District No. 12 and was president during her sixth year. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served for 16 years as superintendent of the Sunday school. She worked with the Women's Association and was president for three years. She was an active member of the PEO Sisterhood since her initiation into Chapter Z in 1937 and was chairman of the of the convention committee in 1962 when the convention was held in Sterling. At that time she was elected to the Colorado State Board, where she served in all seven offices and was president from 1968-69 when the convention was on the campus of CU in Boulder. For several years she was office manager and bookkeeper in her husband's office. Mrs. Gaines is survived by her son, Robert Gaines and wife Elizabeth of Hulett, Wyo.; one brother, David Hamil of Sterling; twin sisters, Margaret Minteer and husband Harry of Lakewood, and Mildred Schroer of Albuquerque, N.M.; two grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
