M. Tillman last Wednesday evening.Mrs. Tillman lived only a few hours after the family car, which she was driving, was hit broadside by a gasoline transport, as she drove across the highway from the bus depot at the Wagner Super Service Station. Mrs. Tillman was thrown from the car by the force of the impact. She was taken to the hospital in Fremont immediately, and there was claimed by death nine hours after the accident. Mrs. Tillman was one of Hooper's best loved women, and was respected for her fine instincts and ideals. She was votedwife and mother, and she gave her influence and support to church and civic organizations, contributing much toward their progressand welfare. Rev. Paul deFreese conducted a prayer service for the family at the home Saturday morning, after which Mr. Tillman was taken back tothe hospital in Fremont in the ambulance. Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Ring accompanied him and stayed with him the rest of the day. The service from the home at 1:30 p.m. was followed by rites at Grace Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. deFreese. Donald Shaffer sang, accompanied by Miss Lois Stigile. The pallbearers were Roy E. Bott, George H. Looschen, Edwin Miles. J. L. Alperstedt, Ray Edelmaier, and William Hargens. Interment was in the Hooper cemetery. Wollmer & Warne were in charge. Hooper business houses were closed during the funeral hour, in loving memory of Mrs. Tillman, and as a mark of respect for the family. The church was filled to capacity in the main auditorium, the Sunday School room, and the basement auditorium. The many beautiful floral offerings and spiritual bouquets were an evidenceof the high esteem in which Mrs. Tillman was held. Mrs. A. M. Tillman, daughter of the late A. W. Hartung and Charlotte Raasch Hartung, was born at Hooper, Nebr., Febr. 3, 1881, and passed away in a Fremont hospital at 11:25 p. m., Aug. 20,1947, at the age of 66 years, 6 months and 17 days.Baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, she attended church and public schools in this community, where she grew to young womanhood. Following the death of her young husband, Henry Uehling, she entered Cook County School of Nursing in Chicago. Upon graduation she was united in marriage to August M. Tillman on May 27, 1908 in Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. Tillman established their home in Hooper where, with the exception of four years residence in Omaha and four years in San Antonio, Texas, they spent their married life of almost 40 years. During these years, Mrs. Tillman was active in church, community and civic affairs, holding various offices in the women's organizations of Grace Lutheran church, of which she was a longtime member. She was a past president of the Hooper Womans Club, and during World War I she headed the Hooper chapter of the American Red Cross, giving many hours of her time, even after the loss of a beloved stepson, Cornelius, who died in service. In the late years of her life, her health was frail and her activities consequently lessened, but she maintained her interest in her family and many friends. Her kindly sympathy and willingness to share in the joys and sorrows of other will be greatly missed in this community where so much of her life was spent. Surviving besides the bereaved husband are her daughter, Mrs. Auralea Nelsen, Lincoln; two grandsons, Stephan and Randall Nelsen;a step-daughter and her son, Mrs. Luella Monnich and Cornelius of Pasadena, Calif.; three brothers, Harry of Compton, Calif.; Arthur of Rock Rapids, Ia., Avillus of Omaha; two sisters, Mrs. Paul K. Miles of Savanna, Ill., and Mrs. Harry Moore of Hot Springs, S. D. Relatives called to Hooper by the passing of Mrs. A. M. Tillman were Mr. and Mrs. Avillus Hartung and daughter, Omaha; Mrs. and Mrs. Harry Moore, Hot Springs, S. D.; and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hartung of Rock Rapids, Iowa. Mrs. Paul K. Miles, daughter Ann, and sons Edward and Charles and the latter's wife, all of Savanna, Ill., came Thursday forenoon after an all night drive, following word of the death of Mrs. Miles' sister, Mrs. A. M. Tillman. Also here for the services were many more family connections and friends from less distant points, Fremont, Omaha, Lincoln, Wisner, and towns of this surrounding area.
