This week it is our duty to chronicle the passing of A. W. Hartung who died last Thursday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Paul Miles, at Savanna, Ills. Infirmities due to old age are attributed to the cause of his death. He had been in gradually failing health the past couple of years. His body arrived in Hooper Saturday morning and was given repose in the Wollmer & Warne mortuary until the day of the funeral services. These were held Sunday afternoon at the A. M. Tillman home, where a large number of relatives and friends assembled to pay a final tribute to a highly respected relative, friend and citizen. The sermon was preached by Rev. A. S. Pannbacker of the Zion Lutheran church, and music was furnished by Vernon Sanders and Donald Shaffer with Miss Charlotte Fritz as accompanist. Pallbearers were J. Louis Alperstedt Peter Parkert, Elmer Schwab, John Tillman, George Uhlig and Ray Edelmaier, sons of old time friends of the deceased. Interment was made in the Hooper cemetery. Out of town relatives here for the funeral included, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Miles and children, Charles, Alice Ann and Edwin, of Savanna, Ills.; Mr. and Mrs. Harry R. Hartung and Robert of Omaha, Arthur E. Hartung and Margaret of Rock Rapids, Iowa, Frank Hartung, Arapahoe, Colo.; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dietz and Mildred of Scribner; Mr. and Mrs. N. J. Hill and Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Schreiber and Merlin, Jr., Wisner; Mr. and Mrs. Casper Raasch and Mr. and Mrs. McLaughlin and Vera, Prairie Home; Mr. and Mrs. Raasch, Ashland; and Merssrs. and Mesdames Henry Paulsen, Peter Miller and family, Wm. Miller and family, Harry Paulsen, and John Raasch, Mrs. Fred Alus and family and Otto Paulson and son, all of Bancroft. Friends from out of town included: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Edelmaier, Nickerson; Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Milverstedt and Clarence Nelson, Fremont; Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Buns, Chicago; Kenneth Crowley, Rock Rapids, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. John Hargens and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Meyer, Scribner; Leo Bruse, Arapahoe, Colo.; Mr. and Mrs. Dewitz and Miss Marion Dewitz, Wisner; and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kasal, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Berg and Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Ferris, Omaha. Albert William Hartung was born in Clyman, Dodge county, Wisc., on May 21, 1857. In 1865, immediately after the Civil War, his father took his family which consisted of his wife, two daughters and two sons, and joined a group of eight families who were traveling with teams of oxen to Nebraska. It took them six weeks to reach the Missouri river at Council Bluffs, from where they were taken by ferry to Omaha. The family came to Dodge county, and took a homestead six miles northeast of the present site of Hooper. Their first home was a sod house, and they later erected a frame house. This is the farm now occupied by Julius Nelson. Excepting for a few years in Omaha, from 1926 to 1929, Mr. Hartung lived nearly his entire life in and near Hooper. He served as postmaster under President Arthur and for over ten years served as rural mail carrier. He was also at one time janitor of the Hooper schools and on various occasions identified himself with the business circles of the town. He also at times was active in fraternal organizations and at the time of his death he held membership in the Sons of Herman order.
