Inurnment will be at Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Edna passed away peacefully at her home in Beavercreek, on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016. On July 17, 1929, Edna was born on the family farm in McPherson County, S.D., to Simon and Magdalena (Bertsch) Heupel. Edna married Walter Helfenstein on Oct. 20, 1946, in Eureka, S.D. Inurnment will be at Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Edna passed away peacefully at her home in Beavercreek, on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016. On July 17, 1929, Edna was born on the family farm in McPherson County, S.D., to Simon and Magdalena (Bertsch) Heupel. Edna married Walter Helfenstein on Oct. 20, 1946, in Eureka, S.D. They farmed together on the Helfenstein family homestead. She enjoyed family, farming, flower gardening, socializing, and following current events all over the world. Edna was a woman of strong faith, and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley. In the fall of 2009, Edna and Walter moved to Beavercreek. After 63 years of marriage, Walter passed away in February 2010. She continued to live independently but in close association with the many friends she made at Fairwood Village in Beavercreek. She also continued her love of flower gardening. Edna is survived by her daughter, Marsha (Mark) Vossler, Beavercreek; her sons, Jeffrey (Judy) Helfenstein, San Antonio, Texas, and Steve (Rene’) Helfenstein, Burnsville, Minn.; five grandchildren, Mitchell Vossler, Beavercreek, Jackie and Alex Helfenstein, San Antonio, and Katie (Dave Opgenorth) and Jessie Helfenstein, Burnsville; her brother, Albert (Violet) Heupel, Aberdeen, S.D.; her brothers-in-law, Otto Helfenstein, Ashley, Harvey (Mary) Helfenstein, Tigard, Ore., and Curtis (Sharon) Helfenstein, Rapid City, S.D.; and sisters-in-law, Adeline Heupel, Ashley, Verna Mettler, Gresham, Ore., and Elmae Helfenstein, Rapid City. In addition to her parents and husband, Edna was preceded in death by five brothers, Edwin (Theresa), Ted (Viola), Adolph, Theophil (Bertha) and Herbert (Lillian) Heupel; and her in-laws, Ruben (Eunice) Helfenstein, Ervin Helfenstein, Edna (Ally) Opp, Mel Mettler and Marlys Helfenstein.
