Walter Helfenstein, son of Gottfried and Eva (Wolf) Helfenstein was born April 30, 1923 on the family homestead near Long Lake, SD. He was united in marriage to Edna Heupel on October 20, 1946 in Eureka Baptist Church at Eureka, SD. He was an Army veteran, farmer and custom combiner. He enjoyed farming, family, socializing, and following politics. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Frank Piper American Legion Post #53. Survivors include his wife of Beavercreek, one daughter, Marsha (Mark) Vossler of Beavercreek, two sons, Jeffrey (Judy) Helfenstein of San Antonio, TX and Steve (Rene) Helfenstein of Burnsville, MN, five grandchildren, Mitchell Vossler of Beavercreek, Jackie Helfenstein and Alex Helfenstein of San Antonio and Kaitlin Helfenstein and Jessica Helfenstein of Burnsville, four brothers, Otto (Marlys) Helfenstein of Bismarck, ND, Ervin (Elmae) Helfenstein and Curtis (Sharon) Helfenstein, both of Rapid City, SD and Harvey (Mary) Helfenstein of Tigard, OR, two sisters, Edna Opp of Portland, OR and Verna Mettler of Gresham, OR and one sister-in-law, Eunice Helfenstein of Fargo, ND. He also leaves behind many special friends, neighbors and relatives. His parents, one brother, Ruben in 2008, two brother-in-laws, Alvin Opp in 1995 and Melvin Mettler in 1992 preceded him in death.
