Edna was raised by her grandparents, Ephriam and Nancy Brown and was known as Edna Brown after that. Her mother, Florence, married Levi Kelley several years after Edna was born, but she and Levi never had any children. Florence Brown became pregnant out of wedlock while they were living in Nebraska, which was a huge scandal at the time (1898). The family story is that this Woodruff man asked Florence to marry him and she said no. Nobody knows why she said no (though I have my suspicions). The story is that Florence's father, Ephriam, was outraged and packed the family up and moved from Nebraska to Kansas. Everyone was forbidden from speaking of the scandal or speaking the Woodruff man's name ever again. As a result, no one in the family today knows for certain what his first name was. We never even knew his last name was Woodruff until the 1900 census showed Edna with the last name Woodruff (before the Brown's began giving her their last name). After some research into the Woodruff family living in Furnas County at that time, we strongly suspect that it was a young man named Edward Woodruff. My great aunt remembers seeing a picture of Edna's (her mother) father once and she said he was very good looking. She doesn't remember where she saw it or where it went and we can't find it today. It'd be great if we knew where it was because Edward's descendants would be able to identify whether it was him or not. We've been in contact with a couple of them and they say he was quite a ladies man back in the day, which would seem to fit in with my great aunt's memory of his looks. This great aunt also has in her possession a letter that Florence's younger sister Sadie Brown wrote not long after Edna was born and one can easily tell from Sadie's words consoling her sister in the letter that Florence is very sad and depressed. Judging from other family stories as well, I have come to the conclusion that Ephriam seemed to have a very short fuse, a quick temper and was not a very kind man. My suspicion is that Florence wanted to marry this Woodruff boy (Edward?) and Ephriam wouldn't let her, instead packing up the family and forcing them to leave Nebraska. This would help explain why Florence told him she wouldn't marry him and why she was so sad afterward. I suspect the similarity between the name she gave her baby, Edna, and Edward Woodruff, is also a significant clue regarding Edna's parentage.
