Description	:	Edna May (Heppner) Ortman was born May 17, 1924 in Stanley, ND to Diedrich and Agatha (Lepp) Heppner. She was the oldest of four brothers and one sister. She understood the importance of Jesus paying for her (everyone’s) sins on... Read More	Edna May (Heppner) Ortman was born May 17, 1924 in Stanley, ND to Diedrich and Agatha (Lepp) Heppner. She was the oldest of four brothers and one sister. The family lived in Stanley, ND during the depression. Due to the drought years with its dust storms and crop failures of the early 1930s, they moved to Warroad, Minnesota. When they saw the tall grass in this area, they called it “cow heaven.” As a young child, Edna learned the stories of Jesus from her mother and grandmother. She understood the importance of Jesus paying for her (everyone’s) sins on the cross, so at the age of 11, Edna accepted Jesus as her Savior. From that time on her favorite verse has always been I Peter 5:7, “Casting all your cares upon Him, for He cares for you.” As Edna became older, she taught Bible School and Sunday School to the youngerchildren. When F.C. Ortmann, Anna and Adeline Ortmann started an Old People’s Home in Marion, SD, she was asked to help them. During that time she met Marvin Ortman who was the grandson of F.C. Ortmann. Edna married Marvin on September 29, 1946 at Warroad, Minnesota. They moved into a small 2-room farm house just below the hill from the Bethel Mennonite Church of Marion, SD. Eventually they moved to Marvin’s Uncle Henry Dick’s place where they had more room. In the spring of 1969 they bought a home and the Dolton Tractor Shop from John J Ensz in Dolton, SD. Edna May and Marvin had two children, Richard Lee and Jean Ann. Edna was always active in the Bethel Mennonite Church by helping Marvin with janitorial duties, teaching Sunday School, participating in Ladies Aid and the Young Mission Workers and singing in the women’s choir. She usually carried a camera and loved to take pictures and document every church event and family gathering. She liked details and particularly keeping track of birthdays, so most people in the community were guaranteed to get a card from her on their birthday. She also liked to work on quilts, do embroidery and tube painting on canvasses. Edna is survived by her son, Richard (Teresa) Ortman of Milford, IA; daughter, Jean (Ortman) Brenner of Plevna, MT; five grandchildren, Thaddeus (Julie) Ortman of Wildwood, MO; Charrisse (Brad) Brockmueller of Sioux Falls, SD;Sabrina (Gene) Poulin of Downers Grove, IL; MatthewBrenner of Jamestown, ND and Tim (Eliza) Brenner ofMedina, ND; nine great grandchildren; one brother, Don (Violet) Heppner of Salem, OR; one sister, Linda Unruh of Atwater, CA; and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Heppner and Bev Heppner, both of Warroad, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin; her three brothers, Harvey, Alfred and Leonard; and one brother-in-law, Ken Unruh.
