Description	:	Edna Johnson passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, at Bethesda Nursing Home in Aberdeen. She was 96. Edna was well known in the community because of her lifetime of volunteer service, especially in education and history. Edna was born to George and Emma Nelson (ne Pearson) on Aug. 15, 1913, in Sioux Falls. George, of Norwegian stock, was born in this country. Edna was well known in the community because of her lifetime of volunteer service, especially in education and history. Edna was born to George and Emma Nelson (ne Pearson) on Aug. 15, 1913, in Sioux Falls. George, of Norwegian stock, was born in this country. Emma came to the United States from Sweden when she was 18. The family remains in regular contact with relatives in Sweden. Edna earned a B.A. from the University of South Dakota. She then taught English and French at Beresford for three years before marrying Preston Scott of Hecla in 1939. Preston had joined his father's business, which eventually consisted of stockyards, a grain elevator and cattle. The couple had two sons, William, in 1944, and Gregory in 1950. Preston and his son, William, both died in 1969. In 1973, Edna married Merritt Johnson, for many decades a beloved professor of music at Northern State University. Merritt passed away in 1978. Over the years, Edna participated in and led many more organizations than we can list here. In the 1940s, she participated in Eastern Star, served as Sunday school superintendent for the Hecla Methodist Church, and helped organize the Hecla PTA. In 1950, she was elected to the Hecla School Board and became its president. She remained on the board until 1963. Edna was president of the Association of School Boards of South Dakota (1953-1956) and a director of the National School Board Association (1954-1960). She led the Brown County School District Reorganization Board (1953-1957), served on the Governor's Teacher Shortage Commission (1954-1956), and was a delegate to the White House Conference on Education (1955). Edna was president of the state PTA (1960-1962) and organized its first state office with paid staff. To mention only two of many honors: the state School Board Association named her outstanding School Board Member in 1961 and presented her with the School Bell Award in 1969. In 1957, she published The School Board Member's Handbook. In one of Edna's first major history efforts, she served as general chair of the Hecla Diamond Jubilee (1960-1961). She helped organize the Brown County Historical Society (president 1984-1988) and the Dakotah Prairie Museum (president 1954-1959 and 1968-1972). Edna edited Brown County History (published 1981) and wrote many sections of it herself. She was commended by the American Association for State and Local History for her work. In 1984, Edna was named First Lady of Aberdeen. She authored A Centennial History of Bethlehem Lutheran Church that same year. She was general chair of the South Dakota Centennial Celebration in Aberdeen (1988-1991). The many other organizations that Edna led over the years included the AAUW, the Brown County Library Board, and community concerts in Aberdeen. Edna's son, Gregory Scott, lives in Medford, Ore., where he edits political science textbooks. He is married to Barbara Scott Winkler, professor of women's studies at Southern Oregon University. Their daughter, Anya, is 13. Mitta Angell and Marcy Chanteaux became Edna's daughters through her marriage to Merritt Johnson. Mitta is a member of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and Marcy is first cello with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Mitta has two grown children, John and Dina.
